BREAKING DOWN DOORS

December 29, 2003 -- FILM footage making the media rounds shows American soldiers breaking through doors in the dead of night to arrest the old regime's remaining thugs. Our troops treat the inhabitants brusquely. Women and children wail.

Shown out of context and carefully edited, the clips portray our troops as bullies from a leftwing fantasy. But those nightlight videos are far more interesting for what they don't show or tell.

Ralph Peters sums up our going a long way to winning in Iraq in one sentence, even though you won't hear it in our media: First win. Then worry about your table manners. Take that Sheryl Crow and Jeanne Garofalo.

Yeah he writes a concise piece but he still supported the perfumed princes, read the intro to his latest book, and you will see what I mean.

The man has an utter dislike for the current SECDEF and a love of the previous one.

Peters makes sense when he makes sense. A lot of good points in his article. I'm not necessarily agreeing with everything he wrote or with his assessment of our current Secretary Of Defense.

Yeah, but that's not surprising for a guy that was an MI dweeb and never served (AFAIK) as a combat arms soldier. For someone who has not been infantry of special ops, he has a pretty good grasp of what the boys are doing, and why it's the right thing to do.

Wasn't it Peters that wrote the lame story in a book of short fiction on future war, that had superhuman female infantrypersons saving helpless males with the help of their (I am not making this up) autonomous Shinseki combat vehicles? Although there was some internal consistency in this, in that the Army will be naming anything after Shinseki around the time women are ready for ground combat, and break the men's records at the Olympics....

As far as SECDEFs are concerned -- the only good thing about Cohen, who was a loser's loser, is that he wasn't as bad as Aspin, who was worth two divisions, an air wing, and a carrier task force to any enemy of ours. The only good thing about Aspin is that he had the human decency to feel guilt and shame when his ineptitude led to American deaths.

Neither of those two bozos was fit to shine Rummy's shoes. But they also weren't the worst SecDefs ever; I don't believe Robert S. Macnamara can ever be matched, let alone excelled.

As a Secretary of Defense, Rummie has been unbeatable. As a proxie on foreign policy, he has been a disaster. Diplomacy has no business being conducted on the basis of ten second sound bites, with the affected target not present to respond or discuss the issue.

If you strike with such shocking effect that the target doesn't even think of reaching for a pistol, the results are better for everyone involved. But you cannot go gentle into that good night.

A friend of mine in law enforcement says this is SOP. He once arrested a drug kingpin in a motel room on a major holiday with his family. The guy had been alluding him for months, was armed and dangerous. The little boy of the drug kingpin pulled on their legs and begged them not to take their daddy away as they slapped on the cuffs.

Did he feel terrible. You bet-- he had a family of his own he was missing Thanksgiving dinner for to get this scumbag off the street. But they couldn't miss letting him slip off again and hope they got another timely tip.

You can't win the hearts and minds of those who hate you bitterly. It's foolish to try.

Here's words for the Senate Republicans to live by.

Whats funny about peters is his Civil War fiction is some of the most compelling I have ever read.

For every clinker of a story or article he writes he writes a ton of good stuff.

I can still see him on a talking head show, being asked about what we should do with the terrs that had attack the US, he simply stated "Kill them" end of interview segment and it was 4 months before I saw him on TV again.
