Dean's Osama oops (he didn't really mean it)
New York Daily News ^ | 12/27/03 | JOHN A. OSWALD

Posted on 12/27/2003 1:43:36 AM PST by kattracks

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean quickly clarified comments yesterday that he won't judge Osama Bin Laden without a trial. "I've resisted pronouncing a sentence before guilt is found," Dean told New Hampshire's Concord Monitor.

"I still have this old-fashioned notion that even with people like Osama, who is very likely to be found guilty, we should do our best not to, in positions of executive power, not to prejudge jury trials," he said.

It took the former Vermont governor a few hours after the story got picked up on the Internet and on wire services to realize that even if the American way is "innocent until proven guilty," it might not be a courtesy extended the terror mastermind.

Dean later told The Associated Press, "As an American, I want to make sure he gets the death penalty he deserves."

The Dean for America press office also weighed in, issuing this statement by Dean: "I share the outrage of all Americans."

He continued: "Bin Laden has admitted that he is responsible for killing 3,000 Americans as well as scores of men, women and children around the world. This is exactly the kind of case that the death penalty is meant for."

The Bin Laden gaffe was just the latest in a string of Dean statements that he later found himself clarifying. The most infamous one has been his pining on the campaign trail for the votes of Southerners with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks.

Dean told The AP he was simply trying to state in the Concord Monitor interview that the process of trying Bin Laden needs to be fair and credible.

But he in no way sympathizes with the Al Qaeda leader, the Democratic front-runner said.

"I'm just like every other American, I think the guy is outrageous," he insisted.

He makes it absolutely, crystal clear that we shouldn't prejudge Osama... and then he does exactly that, and in no uncertain terms.

This guy flips and waffles more than IHOP.

Keep putting your foot in your mouth, Dean.

We enjoy the gyrations as you work so hard to extricate said foot.

We know you love bin Laden. So you might as well relax.

Dean may look nutty, but he isn't. Dean figures that the way to get the Democrat vote is to be a totally unscrupulous, unprincipled, liar. He learned all he knows about Democratic politics from Bill Clinton, apparently. Bill got elected because he was an unscrupulous, unprincipled, liar, so why shouldn't it work for Dean? Hey?

Yeah right. This statement alone is enough to doom Howie in NYC. He might not even carry the big blue state of NY.

Outrageous? RuPaul is outrageous. Was Dean asleep during 9/11? He seems to think that besides being "outrageous", Bin Laden is a victim of an angry America seeking a scapegoat.

Hitler suicided and there was no chance of trying him. Dean is a goofball,,to talk about osama's right to a trial before prejudging him is ludicrous and kind of weird if you ask me.

I hope our soldiers read Osama his mirada rights before they arrest him under a Dean Presidency, otherwise we may have to let old Osama go.

Take a look at the trigger.

Is that supposed to be Dean, or Bill Clinton?

Dean is pathalogical. I'm beginning to think maybe we need shrink evalfor Pres Candidates. Dean is totally nuts. I wonder how his Patients dealt with his lying and backtracking. "You have Cancer. Well it's not really Cancer, more like a mole that COULD become cancerous" But, the evil Dums will probably nominate him and BUSH WINS.

Dr. Dean should commit himself. No joke. The fool is unstable and starting to scare me. He is even more dangerous than Clark.

I never thought I would find "Little Dick Gephardt" appealing

1. "We shouldn't pre-judge Osama bin Laden."

2. "Never mind about #1."

Is that supposed to be Dean, or Bill Clinton?

A serious question and it is fortunate we have this kind of insight on FR.

Based on what we know about Clinton (even though we never have had access to his medical records), he suffered from Dupuytren's Disease, The "trigger" does have a certain bend to it so it could be Clinton. But Dupuytren's Disease contraction is usually more pronounced and angular, not a smooth bend.

However, that does not necessarily mean it is Dean. Dean is short and even though there is not a direct correlation between height and length, it is generally true, especially among white males. So, even though the other dem candidates refer to Dean with approbations connected to the member in question, it is probably not him.

Therefore, from the evidence available to us, it is probably neither but a body double.

The best evidence indicates Madeline Albright. QED

I still say it is all a set-up for Hillary. She cannot allow Dean to take over the party. Clark's campaign seems to have tanked. Bush appears unbeatable.

Hillary must maintain control of the party for 2008. To do so, she may be the candidate in 2004. Even if she loses against Bush in 2004, she maintains control of the Party. Otherwise, if Dean wins the nom, the party could face an irreparable rift (libs vs mods) by 2008, ensuring its defeat. Hillary must maintain control of the party ---in 2004 even to have a chance in 2008.

Additionally, if Guiliani challenges Hillary for the Senate, he might de-seat her. She cannot afford to stay idle in the Pres election, lose control of the party, and possibly lose her Senate seat. That would ruin her political ambition (1st Woman President).
