Poll: Dean Trailing Bush by Wide Margin

By WILL LESTER
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) -
Howard Dean is gaining ground as the leading candidate in the Democratic presidential contest but he appears to be a substantial underdog in a hypothetical matchup against President Bush, a national poll says.

The ABC News-Washington Post poll, released Monday, found Dean, a former governor of Vermont, backed by 31 percent of Democrats and those who lean Democratic. All other candidates were in the single digits.

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman and Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt were at 9 percent, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry at 8 percent, retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark at 7 percent, North Carolina Sen. John Edwards at 6 percent, activist Al Sharpton at 5 percent, Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich at 2 percent and former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun with less than 1 percent. Fourteen percent were undecided.

Says Dean has a better web presense than Bush... I dont know about anyone else but Deans 'blogforamerica' is hardly easy to look at compared to georgewbush.com.

In terms of color scheme, online tools, navigation ease and general fluidness; Bush gets the nod.

When all respondents were asked who they would trust more with national security, 67 percent said Bush and 21 percent said Dean.

Two thirds of the respondents have it right.

I'd rather publicize this after Dean has the Democrat nomination wrapped up.

If only we had someone who could beat Bush. Someone who can turn out the votes. Someone like Hillary, but where are we going to find someone like her ?

I've said this several times already on several other threads:

Bush will win by double digits in 2004, no matter who runs against him.

I guarantee it.

It just seems too good to be true; I keep hearing this voice in the back of my head – ‘be careful of what you wish for it might come true’. While I really hope Bush is reelected (he is the only politician I have voted for, and has been elected, who I liked more after they were elected than before they were) I can’t help feeling that while I would rather we run agents Dean, I would – if worse came to worse – lose to Lieberman.

Don't worry. Dean is a done deal. It's too late for anyone else (other than Hillary) to get the nomination. He's got the momentum, the money and the far left fired up.

First I wanted a landslide win, but My2Cents has convinced me that we want a bloodbath of a win for GWB. :)

Who says Dean will win the nomination? Lots could happen between now and next summer. Bill Clinton was not leading the polls at this stage in 1992.

Because Dean's is a huge scroll with no contrast, full of navigation to unknown side sites, and really all you see is constant- give! do! write! contribute!. That overemphasized energy is really annoying to most people over 14.

I love this quote from Dean's site:
But Dean said he's no revolutionary. "We don't need to upend the system that we have," he said, "We just need to make the system work properly. The system doesn't work if the leadership doesn't care."

That's right Howard, it all automagically works if we just "care".

Our Department Christmas party was at the house of one of my techs and there was a Dean campaign sign decorating the living room. In our very liberal Pacific Northwest town, that's all you see in regards to bumper stickers: Dean, Dean, Dean.

Still, the first vote has yet to be cast and the other Dems are sounding the alarm of impeding disaster. I'm worried that the Dem voters are going to wake up and get a clue before they go over the cliff.

I hope that the early primary strategy cooked up by McAuliffe has Dean gift wrapped for us by March.
