Robert Novak is saying that if Dean wins in Iowa and New Hampshire he basically has a lock on it, because the system is so front-loaded now. How can it be that front-loaded?

The word was that McAuliffe and the DNC set up the primaries to allow a single candidate to grab the nomination quickly. This was supposed to help save money and the party infighting of a protracted race. Like the rest of their best designed plans, it looks like this will backfire. And why they ever thought that Iowa (with its caucus) or New Hampshire were sufficiently representative of the general electorate, I'll never know.

Thanks for the info. January should be real interesting. They still have a month to try to pull the rug out from under Dean, so with a few more weeks like Dean has been having lately it could happen. Also, the press may get merciless with Dean if they smell blood. I think Gephardt is quietly lining up a lot of ducks in Iowa and may win there, and even it Dean wins New Hampshire he could still fall short of expectations there. As an illustration of how far from the mainstream Dean is, I noticed that even Soros said in his book that its a good thing Saddam is out of power. Apparently there are still about 3 democrats who aren't supporting Dean for each 1 who is, so maybe its not over yet. IMHO, the best possible ticket for them could be Gore/Dean, but of course that is almost impossible now.
