"Funny how he's carrying on about paganism while various pagan trappings of the Saturnalia are taken as part and parcel of normative Christmas observance." Not really, once you understand that when Constantine legalized Chrisitanity that hundreds of thousands of pagans converted to Christ. That the pagans exchanged gifts during their veneration of Saturn and this tradition was allowed to slip into the Christmas traditions can't be seen as a bad thing. Pope Liberius (in 354 A.D.) dedided to honor Christ as "the Light of the World" and declared His birthday to be December 25th, supplanting Saturn's veneration during this week, and this is actually a tribute to the defeat of paganism.
Christians fully understand, (or at least they should), that the important thing about Christmas is not the exchanging of gifts, or whether December 25th is the actual, precise day of Christ's birth...it's the fact that the birth of the Saviour is being celebrated all over the earth by two billion Christians that matters.

I have to disagree about Chanukah. It's called the Feast of Dedication in the New Testament and Jesus went to the Temple to celebrate it. The celebration is a remembrance of a miracle that God did concerning the Second Temple. In this sense it is incomparable with Kwanzaa which was simply made up.

I won't sit here and joust over the evolution of the Christmas holiday, but I'll give you one good reason not to celebrate Kwanzaa, and that's all you need: it's a pagan celebration cooked up in the barren, desolate mind of a leftist black militant who didn't want to celebrate Whitey's holiday. In a nutshell.
'Nuff said.

Sometimes simplicity is the easiest way to go. Some people just can't see it for what it truly is.

The goal is not to celebrat kwanzaa. The goal is to make kwanzaa a paid federal holiday.

"In this sense it is incomparable with Kwanzaa which was simply made up." I never did compare Hannuka with Kwaanza, I simply used both as an example that neither one of these events is anywhere near as important to their followers as Christmas is to Christians.
Christmas became a national holiday because of its supreme importance to Christians in America, whereas neither Hannukah nor Kwaanza would be given that kind of prominence even in their lands of origin of Israel and Africa. They are comparatively minor events. Hence, neither of them belongs in the same category as Christmas, and they (by design) serve only to bring Christmas down to some theologically insignificant "holly jolly holiday season".
To: TheCrusader
Point taken and I agree that leftists are using it as a tool to detract from Christmas. Chanukah certainly has to be one of the least important in Jewish celebrations.
Having said that, Chanukah wasn't solely brought about to undermine the Christian celebration of the Advent. What I guess I'm trying to say is that unlike Kwanzaa it poses no threat to Christians or Christian theology. Chanukah celebrates God's faithfulness while Kwanzaa seeks to replace God with secular humanism. I would even go so far as to say that Chanukah can be incorporated into Christmas celebrations highlighting God and Covenants. That would seriously disturb the ACLU, which is something we can all celebrate.

good post
I had one poster on FR keep bringing up "X-MAS" as an ancient Greek name.
Then bringing up "Felice Navidad" as a valid substitute.
More dilerberate diluting and censorship of American traditions and culture.
Your post explains why many store owners remove "CHRIST" from Christmas.

America - the greatest country in the world - was founded on the concept of religious freedom. In America, you can be a Christian, Jew, Muslim, atheist or pagan without fear of persecution. While government cannot endorse one religion over the other, individuals can.
Something that seems to escape many people.
