Bob Bartley was truly a great American whose writings and insights were unsurpassed. He will be sorely missed. Sincerest condolences to family and friends.

What a great writer and American we have lost.

May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted.

There was a Democratic Party lurching left and a Republican Party dominated by pale and chubby men who had reluctantly or eagerly embraced liberalism because, as they used to say, they knew what time it was.

Sounds a lot like the present, except today's liberal Pubbies have lost weight and go out into the sun sometimes.

Indeed. His work exemplified true journalism. But he was more than a journalist; he was a patriot. He loved his country deeply.

I am of that age and I remember too. Bartley was a soldier in a war that seemed hopeless, and a stalwart man one could always count on. Thank you, Peggy Noonan, for this moving remembrance.

There are online dictionaries.  I keep http://www.yourdictionary.com/ in my personal toolbar.

Rather than cut right to the chase and spoil the fun, I'll define 'treacle' as syruptitious writing.
