She did exactly what she should have done in any rational world. She wanted to secure her firearms (not guns) when staying in a hotel. Why it caused a flap is indicative of how irrational GB has become about firearms.

The UK continues to become a more controlled but less civilized place. The treatment of a Dame traveling about with a pair of sporting shotguns in 1903 would provide quite a contrast with this incident. Should she ever come to NE Iowa, she is welcome to store her doubles at my house.
(That didn't sound right... )

Dame Kiri, who is also a keen golfer and angler... I hope they patted her down for illegal fish hooks and 9-irons.

I'm not sure why I even see this as a story?
OK... so the hotel didn't have any protocol for storing firearms. It would have been better if she would have just taken them to her room and not asked... but she attempted to be upfront about it. Looks like even the local cops weren't all that hinked up about it. They offered to store them, they gave them back to her when she went out...
Given that brits are somewhat more paranoid about guns, this doesn't look all that off the charts to me. What's the story here?

"It caused quite a flap".
Well--there is nothing like a dame.
I wonder if Kiri knows the song.

Nobody's wondering what the heck Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is doing staying at a Holiday Inn?
By the way, the Basil Fawlty comments in other posts are particularly apt because, if I recall correctly, the hotel upon which Fawlty Towers was based (the Pythons had stayed there) was called the Gleneagles. Either that, or the hotel used for the series' exterior shots was the Gleneagles. (Not this Holiday Inn, though.)

Nice to see that the elite in England still can have firearms, and can even get a chuckle out of the inconvieniences they've foisted on the sheep...
