...the son of a man "born with a silver foot in his mouth" (Ann Richards mumbled this)...I, a Texan, am very proud of this man, George W. Bush.

Those last words capture much about this president: "Confident, determined, and unafraid."

He reminds me of my grandmother, who raised me. That is my highest praise. She was a tough old bird, and so is he.

Bush's speechwriters are as good as Reagan's!

Of the ten best speeches I've listened to in my life, Bush has delivered 3.

Speech to the Nation, Sept. 20,2001 ranks in the top 5.

Anybody have some other top notch memories?

MLK....I have a dream

JFK........inaugural address

Reagan.......acceptance speech at 1980 Republican Convention.

Winston Churchill.......iron curtain

You can almost hear the voice of Churchill, quoting:

Sail on, sail on, O Ship of State,
Sail on O Union strong and great!

I think one of the points of this essay is that America is not a nation of philosopher-kings, but a nation in which an average man - attuned to our highest ideals of faith, service, and freedom - can capture the strength and vision to rise above events and steer the nation and even the world through the gravest perils. And that is one reason why Europe - always searching for salvation through a totalitarian "politics of meaning" - resents us.

Even The Independent praises Bush's London speech; meanwhile, American papers are trying to make an issue out of the turkey that Bush posed with in Iraq..

I loved this article. It points to many of the President's finest moments - moments that the media continue to ignore, downplay or criticize. The more the media try to drag him down, the more loyal to him I become. Talking about the stupid turkey just shows the media for what they are - communists and frauds.

All of the president's speeches are posted on:

http://www.whitehouse.gov

I'm not going to give you the exact link ... not only do I not have the time right now, but I wish to encourage you and everyone else to check out this excellent website with all our president's archives.

I also STRONGLY recommend that you check out the June 1, 2002 speech at West Point for a thumbnail sketch of our President's vision for the future.

"Ann Richards now has a silver foot up her ass." --- Spoken by someone on election night, 1994.

"... I will not yield; I will not rest; I will not relent in waging this struggle for freedom and security for the American people."

Bill Clinton could just as easily have said those words.

The difference is that George Bush meant them.

Bill Clinton spent eight years being served by his country. President Bush serves, not only his country, but humanity in general.

Thanks for posting this excellent piece. I have often remarked in FR posts that this President has given some of the most beautiful, powerful and important speeches in American history. Although his presidency is still unfolding, so we don't yet have the perspective of time and history, there is no question whatsoever that George W. Bush is one of the most consequential presidents ever.
