To be fair, I also had the unplesant experience of serving under an ROTC shavetail over there for a brief period. The NG were a better deal.
NG's are for homeland use, not for foreign deployment. In theory, anyway.

Don't knock the Guard unless you served in it. Most of the officers in the Guard in the late 60's came into it after their tour in the Army. Most were Nam Vets who made the Guard a career and some went into the Army Reserve. After the late 60's the volunteers were mostly veterans. So if you want to knock the Guard and Reserves you're knocking fellow Vets for the most part!
