I'm at the point where if I hear the word "Holiday" I want to throw up.

Put the "Holy" back in "Holiday"?

I think I'm going to get a bumper sticker or something that says "Jesus is the reason for the season" or "Put the Christ in Christmas" - anyone know where I can buy ones like that?

A Christian bookstore, perhaps?

THE NEW leader of Scotland’s Catholics has called for St Andrew’s Day to be made a national holiday.

Interesting. I'd been told it couldn't be a church feast, the way St. Patrick's is, because it falls in Advent.

I am making a concerted effort to say Merry CHRISTmas to as many people as I can by December 25.

Even though I'm Jewish, I make it a point to say "Merry Christmas."

Thanks :) Happy Chanukkah!

Why stop then? That's the beginning of the 12 Days of Christmas, not the end... *\:^)

St. Patrick's day necessarily falls in Lent. (The Archbishop - here in Boston - always gave a dispensation from the Lenten fast.)

In a current commercial for a pet store, a woman is "spoiling" her new puppy. She's buying him all sorts of little doggie gifts. Her husband admonishes her, and her reply? But honey, "it's his first holiday!"

First "holiday?" What, Halloween?

No she is, of course, talking about "that which must not be named" - Christmas.

You know, when I first saw this commercial, that's all I saw, despite having a Christmas tree, stockings, etc., it was her puppies' first "holiday". I've pointed this commercial out to several people. I didn't see any Chanukkah or ramadan or kwanza decorations hanging in their house. I was personally offended. Certainly made me less likley to shop at this store.

Or, see what happens if you do say "Merry Christmas" in response to "happy holidays" sometime. The younger clerks will look terrified, as if to say "shhhh, don't you know that's not allowed! You're going to get us both in trouble!"

I've been experiencing this for years now, here in the SF bay area. Once only secular , now new age and pagan symbols adorn our community every "holiday" time. Now, post modern alternate symbols and themes include: materialism: money & the good life and earth centered themes: nature, the Earth, sun, moon and stars, trees rocks and animals, world peace, and themes from eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

"thank you for saying that." Why? What am I, a freedom fighter or something?"

I love it. Reminds me that in fact, Jesus Christ was and is the ultimate freedom fighter for those of us who believe and trust in Him.

Think about it before you defend "Christmas" too fiercely.

It is true, but it is an opportunity for those who believe in Christ, to celebrate His coming into the world as a man to redeem us and bring us salvation, and an opportunity to worhship Him, thank Him, remember that He is coming again, to look, long and hope for that, and to tell others about Him.

I love the simplicity of Christmas, not the ghost of it's former self, it has become.

Dear Red,

No flames from me! Christmas has become overly commercialized by merchants who hope to end their fiscal year in the black.

There is nothing to stop you from downsizing the commercialization and upgrading the spiritual aspects of this beautiful holiday season. Last night, we lit the first candle on our Advent wreath, and listened to seasonal hymns as we meditated on the gifts God has already bestowed on us. Try it! You may create a new family tradition in the process. And, if I haven't already done so, please accept my best wishes for a

MERRY CHRISTMAS

What a lovely tradition. I have always kept Christmas simple. Now with the children grown, it is even more so, and I think more spiritural. I still read the Christmas Story from the Bible on Christmas Eve. The week before Christmas I read 'The Story of the Other Wise Man'...wonderful little book, and make every effort to wish people a Merry Christmas.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas. :)

I have had the unfortunate duty of being a clerk at Christmas time, and I can't tell you how many cranky and not so nice customers that rip me a new one if I wish them a Merry Christmas and they don't celebrate it. Then if I wish them a Happy Holiday, they think I'm being snide. So to heck with them all. Merry Christmas, darn it.
