The great grandparents leave their home in Mount Airy, Md., in plenty of time for the 45-minute drive to BWI. "Sometimes, it takes us a little longer to get started," said Bill, who belongs to VFW Post 10076 in Mount Airy. "But we get rolling and get over here."

When asked why they get up before the sun and maintain such a schedule, the couple who have been married 52 years, have the same answer - to ensure there is someone there when the soldiers come home.

I spoke with the director of the USO at BWI and they gave encouraging feedback that if more volunteers show up they feel as if they may be able to provide free parking. These troops need a consistant crowd of about 30 people for these flights. Individuals can organize to rotate to prevent burnout and still have good numbers.

Any connecting flights or additional transportation costs are the responsibility of the soldier.

If I was even a mini-Bill Gates, I'd be at the airport with a wad of C-notes and handing
a couple to any soldier in transit...
