'Reagans' flap: Conservative turning point?
USA Today ^ | November 10, 2003 | Michael Medved

The recent battle over the CBS miniseries The Reagans simultaneously demonstrates the American right's new media power and its lingering sense of persecution and impotence. On the one hand, conservatives flexed their muscles with a stunning mobilization of public protest to force the network to cancel plans to broadcast the series in its mid-November "sweeps" period.

I doubt CBS et al will ever make a docudrama of Kennedy disclosing his womanizing and drug addicitions/dependencies. Fair & Balanced?

Any movie producer wanting to explore a post-9-11 thriller with a conservative point of view should check out my novel.

I thought the Florida coup was the turning point for conservatives.

Or was it the "Take back the Senate!" campaign of 2002?

Thanks for posting this article. These summaries and the suggestion are excellent:

"Conservatives have mobilized inventiveness and passion to ensure journalistic communication of our point of view.

"We've also developed peerless expertise in exposing and condemning liberal excesses in the popular culture.

"The high-profile battle over an entertainment show such as The Reagans suggests that the time has come to take the next step. In other words, those on the right who feel assaulted by left-wing messages in pop culture — from sitcoms to award shows, from feature films to pop songs — should do less complaining and more creating.

We need a company that produces tv shows based on conservative values. I would be willing to buy stock in such a company.

Also, we need a national conservative newspaper to counter USA Today, the NY Slimes, LA Slimes and other rat controlled fish wraps.

Last but not least, we need a conservative financial reporting group to present the financial news correctly and not in the left wing manner that CBS, CNBC, Reuters and Bloomberg do.

Again many conservatives like me would be glad to buy stock in these organizations.

The turning point was Florida 2000, and Free Republic was the catalyst for rapid conservative counter-attacks, something the 'rats had never seen before.

Hey, I've got a novel ready to become a screenplay if such a network gets off the ground!

How about a complete and factual account of the Bill and Hillary Clinton story? /sarcasm/

How about Fair & Balanced too?

That type of corporation would be a real money-maker. I would buy stock as well.

The mystery to me is why no one has done this. Given the success of Fox, it is obvious there is a ready audience.

I think that PAX is about the closest.

All of our funds are in IRAs and 401ks. Our Fido Iras allow us to buy any stock sold on a major exchange.

Besides wanting to invest in something like this for the good of the country/world, I think that investments in the companies providing what I noted would be good investments.

If this your current novel or another one?

That was the real beginning. There have been other victories along the road. There will be many more in the next year.

Well, we know that some highly connected people/groups read and scan FR.

Hopefully, someone will wake up and bring these ideas into reality. Like you, I feel that there is a great opportunity for a double success:

#1 Getting the truth out there for all to see and read.
#2. As you noted, these could be excellent financial investments.

Also, I'm surprised that some mutual fund company hasn't come out with a conservative guided mutual fund. The other side has Green Funds and so called Socially Responsible funds. Some of the SR funds have good track records and have performed as well if not better than others in their categories.

"Consider the impact of Oliver Stone's skillful but paranoid thriller, JFK. Some Americans always had believed that President Kennedy died at the hands of a conspiracy, but polls showed that this conviction became vastly more common after the release of the Oscar-nominated film in 1991."

For the record, two things:

1. The Congress of the USA concluded that JFK most likely died as the result of a conspiracy. That was the result of the report of the House & Senate Select Committees on Assassinations.

2. Oliver Stone's "JFK" is a near literal film version of Judge Garrison's book "On the Trail of the Assassins" which was published in the late '60's. The claim that "JFK" is Stone's personal, paranoid delusion regarding JFK's death is simply untrue.

Pundits are reading entirely too much into this. It was at most a skirmish in the culture wars. If the movie had not been filled with actionable slanders, conservatives would not have been able to chase them off the air.

But to see liberals squirming in frustration and shame is certainly enjoyable.
