Will your job move to India?

Millions of U.S. jobs will be exported in the coming decade, forecasters say. Here are the jobs that are especially vulnerable, plus 5 that aren't.

One of the most unsettling truths about the job market today can be found in two seemingly insignificant recent announcements by high-tech powerhouses Oracle and Hewlett-Packard.

Software giant Oracle (ORCL, news, msgs) said it's moving 2,000 developer jobs from the United States to India, doubling the number of developers it has on payroll there. Then Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, news, msgs) announced plans to close a customer-service operation in Florida and send the operation's 1,200 jobs overseas, again to India.Money 2004.

How come all these fear mongering articles about the move of jobs to India appeared just before the sunset of the expanded H1B visa limit, and no longer appear today?

A few months ago, I had to call Hewlett Packard's customer service dept. regarding a problem with my deskjet printer. I was patched through to India. Let me tell you, that person had no clue what I was talking about. He wanted to send me a reworked replacement printer when all I needed was someone to adjust the paper feed. Same thing happened with Dell when I called about my speakers.

My job is safe.

But most people I know are still worried, if not about themselves for friends/family.

I hear stories about how the docks are overcrowded with overseas shipping containers since we take in boatloads but don't export anything anymore.

We could poke some airholes in them, toss in a bucket or two and load em up with illegals and ship em to India and China to help alleviate their shortage of criminal invaders, er, I mean (undocumented) workers.

We have had to call several customer service companies recently, and we had Indian(Asian) folks speaking such rapid English that I finally just gave up and used email. We called Upromise and got a foreigner who gave us the wrong information regarding how to withdraw our funds. What a pain! I am sick and tired of this nonsense, and will seek to not do business with any of them.

Over the past couple of years my company has explored outsourcing some our IT offshore (India) for development and maintenance, specifically for our ERP system. While some cost savings appear significant at first glance, when you start inviting Mr. Murphy to comment on how his law might apply we've never come close to justifying it. Delays, language and cultural issues, time zone issues and the lack of direct control over the poeple doing the work have all been jusged risks that far outweigh the potential benefits. Not to mention we know our business and a bunch of coders halfway around the world do not.

If a company makes an outsourcing decision based solely on promised savings without considering the potential for disaster and disruption of business they could be setting themselves up for a very expensive and perhaps even catastrophic surprise.

I agree. Unfortunately, Dell, HP and Harmon Cardon all outsource to India. I guess I'm stuck with this idiocy until I change PC's. By then, they will all be outsourcing abroad.

We'll see in a few years from if giants like Dell are adversely affected.

IMHO, what I find ironic is that Federal and State IT outsourcing is in abundance. What kind of example is the govt setting for private industry? Not that it really matters to private industry. In the State IT contract to which I was assigned, there were so many H1B East Indians that we called the isle they worked in 'Little New Delhi'.

I am as motivated against companies that have foreigners calling me (can't be on the no call list with companies that we use) over and over again as I was against CBS for the Reagan movie. When consumers cannot contact someone who has a clue at a company, then woe unto the company. Our children once had an Indian (Asian) physician. I could not understand him. Thankfully, his nurse translated his English into English I could comprehend. I know the nurse well. Otherwise, I would have found a different physician.

Challenger Gray says that you can't offshore health care jobs. That's right -- so H1bs are being trucked in to fill the positions.

What do you do when buying a new PC? Find out if they outsource first? I assume eventually they all will.

Challenger Gray says that you can't offshore health care jobs.

So we're all supposed to re-train to be nurses and PAs and the economy will be based solely on health care jobs. I don't think so.
