George Bush vs. the Naive Nine [Sen. Zell Miller (D)]
Wall Street Journal ^ | Nov 3, 2003 | Sen. Zell Miller

Edited on 04/23/2004 12:06:05 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

If I live and breathe, and if -- as Hank Williams used to say -- the creek don't rise, in 2004 this Democrat will do something I didn't do in 2000, I will vote for George W. Bush for president.

So I cannot vote for a candidate who wants us to cut and run with our shirttails at half-mast.

Bump!

Shame on me! I'm a Georgia voter who called Miller, "Zig Zag Zell", and I never voted for him. But when Miller was appointed by a democrat governor to finish out Republican Senator Coverdell's senate term, he promised Georgians he would be unbiased, I tentatively believed him. I thought he wouldn't want to finish up a long career by lying to the people of Georgia. Thankfully, that has proven so.

Zell Miller is showing Bill Clinton how to write a legacy.

But yet he voted for a candidate who cut and ran with his pants around his ankles. Oh, well. Progress is progress!

"hitting behind the runner" What does that quote mean?

It's a baseball term that means giving up yourself as a batter for the team by hitting the ball to right side of the field, allowing a runner on first to advance to second (on an out) or third base (on a hit) from where it's much easier to score a run.

Baseball term, hit-and-run. Runner on 1st breaking for 2nd, the 2nd baseman leaves his position to cover the bag at 2nd and the batter hits one through the hole (vacated position) behind the runner. In reference to President Bush former affiliation with the Texas Rangers baseball team.

Zell's what Southern Democrats used to be like. He does Georgia proud and we're lucky to have him. Too bad his replacement probably won't be in his league, unless it's somebody like Jack Kingston.

Great essay. Senator Zell Miller comes close to the definition of a statesman who sees broader national interests over narrow partisan interests. We will miss him when he leaves the Congress.

We will miss him when he leaves the Congress.

Hopefully we won't miss his 47% ACU voting record. He's not much higher than Clellan.

Just think.... the Dems can't wait for this guy to be gone in Jan. '05.

They have no idea what they're losing.... Zell is almost literally the last Democrat of any national prominence left, who does not come off as a through-and-through foaming extremist. It's a good thing for us he isn't running for President, 'cause he'd give Bush serious trouble.... on the other hand, he'd be the only Dem candidate I can imagine who could win and still allow me to fall asleep on Election Night.

I picture the Democrat Party as a group of lemmings that have coalesced into a ball to, as one, take that final willing leap off the cliff of sanity.... but remain hanging in space because one of their number, Zell Miller, refused to join them -- and instead secured a rope around his waist and stood firm on solid ground, with the other end of the rope tied to the writhing ball of resentful leftist lemmings.

Finally the one sensible lemming saw that it was pointless and decided to just cut the rope. It's left to us to wonder which side is happier to be rid of the other.

You and Bug did your best to make me understand "hitting behind the runner". This helped too:

"Hitting Behind the Runner. When a batter is hitting behind the runner, he is hitting the ball to the right side of the field, which is behind a runner who is going from first to second base. If the ball is hit behind the runner and the ball goes into the outfield, the runner has a good chance to reach third base because the right fielder has a long throw to make. If a ball is hit in front of the runner into left field, the runner is less likely to go to third, because the throw to third for the left fielder is fairly short."

"I find it hard to believe, but these naive nine have managed to combine the worst feature of the McGovern campaign -- the president is a liar and we must have peace at any cost -- with the worst feature of the Mondale campaign -- watch your wallet, we're going to raise your taxes. George McGovern carried one state in 1972. Walter Mondale carried one state in 1984. Not exactly role models when it comes to how to get elected or, for that matter, how to run a country."

Absolutely a brilliant line. It will work during Saturday night debates with your liberal friends.
