If I had a shake roof on my house and lived near one of the Canyons, it would be replaced ASAP.

The main problem is that there's such a weight difference between shingles and tiles that the entire roof would also need to be re-engineered and rebuilt, which cost major $$$. It's not just an issue of shingle replacement.

That's why we paid the difference in price when we had our house built in Yucaipa in order to get the tile roof with the stucco. I was afraid to live in a shake roofed home and when I found out what you had to do to replace a shake roof, we paid the extra for tile.
