Stock up the freezer if you like steak because beef prices at the supermarket are on their way up. And they're likely to stay there for a while.

U.S. cattle prices are at a record high, say economists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They've increased 34% since July, and this month the benchmark price of Nebraska choice steers went from $90 to $116 per 100 pounds. A year ago, the price per 100 pounds was $64.

The hilarious thing about this article is that I happen to personally know the president of Cattle Buyers Weekly. Honestly. He's a nice guy. And BTW, his name is Steve Kay NOT David Kay. Haaaaaaa!!!

Ooooh, is he going to get raazed!! Tsk, Tsk to USA Today on those pesky details like publishing correct names.

Seriously folks, this seems to be more than just buzz in the industry. May be time to clean out those freezers and head to the butchers store.

It's about time. Drought and the fear of Mad Cow disease have just about beat down the ranchers around here. Montana runs on cattle.

Notice that the ar-tickle calls Atkins "venerable." As in time-tested and respected. Certainly a far cry from the vested naysayers.

I'll have to pop over to Le Krogere and see what they're charging for their USDA Questionable. Supermarkets USED to all carry USDA Choice. Boy, those days are long gone.

Here in Nashville, we've got a pretty good war going between Pooblix and Le Krogere which helps keep prices contained. And there's a new 24/7 Wally World opening across the street in one week. Sounds like it might be a good time to stock-em-up.

Beef prices have been high for a while. I've been eating a lot more chicken and pork lately.

Sure. If the price of steers on the hoof is up nearly 100% in past year. Alot of this is due to feed price increases. Costs more for water to irrigate the hay fields since nature hasn't been cooperating lately.

Omaha Meats buys up all thier holiday meats at this time of year driving the price of beef up. They buy a lot of meat!

Cargill, ADM, and the huge feedlot operators will see the real profit here.

Hey, if the ranchers get more for their meat, fine by me. I just know that when prices go up for things like veggies and milk, the farmers around here don't see as much profit as the middle men and the grocers.

I think some of the price spike may be due to the Mad cow scare in Canada last year and the ban on importation of Canadian beef. I don't know if it still is in effect but it sure was several months age.

Yes. I've heard it several places now. Atkins dieters are contributing to the high cost of beef.
