(Gaines Township, October 16, 2003, 3:00 p.m.) There is a report of two people with a gun near East Kentwood High School in Gaines Township.
The school is on lockdown at this hour. We don't know if there are students inside the school. It is parent teacher conference day. The students all had a half day.
There are no reports of shots fired or injuries. There are a number of police agencies on the scene.
For parents or people concerned about thsoe who may be in the school, police ask that you go to the Cornerstone United Methodist Church parking lot at 2045 68th Street for information.
24 Hour News 8 has crews there as well. We will continue to keep you updated on this developing story.

There
might have been someone
near a school with something that
looked like a gun, so it's obviously time to
panic.
There were about a dozen emergency response vehicles on the scene. The school was locked-down for nearly three hours.
*sigh* THIS is down right stoopid.

Could be just someone near the school spotted with a gun.
A bank robbery the other day in our town, resulted in a lockdown of schools in the vicinity, because the robber was carrying a high powered rifle and had escaped in the direction of the schools.

Could be just someone near the school spotted with a gun. That's exactly what happened: someone thought they saw two people with a gun near a school, so the school was locked down.

persons with gun reported NEAR schoolI guess we should just ban the wretched things so that all these problems will magically disappear, once and for all.

I'm all for banning schools....parents can teach better and more completely than most "teachers" anyway, and they can impost dicipline, which teachers can't....Think of all the tax money we would save!!!!!

I agree.....
On top of it all... How can they not know that there are students in the building? Should they have bothered to CHECK?! (Not that they should have locked down the school in the first place) It almost makes it funny in a very perplexing way.

A few years ago there was a robbery and the guy with a gun hid in the woods near a school. The school went into lock down. Not such a bad policy, really.

I agree when an actual, verifiable crime takes place. Someone possibly walking near a school who maybe has a gun is not that.

Good grief. 40% of the vehicles in Houston contain a gun, and they drive through school zones at least twice a day. Don't tell the press.

Since everyone knows that "statistics show" that a school shooting occurs every 2.7 seconds in America, we should just lock them down all the time while we march gun owners off to the "re-education centers".

Yes, but if the crime is too recent, the school may not know for sure. Better to err on the side of safety for the kids. imho.

We used to hunt pheasant back in the 60's in a posted field near there. Maybe somebody finally turned us in!
