October 14, 2003 -- RUSH Limbaugh has dished it out in his 15-year career as a radio-talk show host. And anybody who dishes it out has to be able to take it when he behaves in ways that open him up for criticism.

When you're drowning, a toothpick looks like a redwood.

Let 'em rant.

I have no idea whether his career will survive this terrible moment. But the ideas he has championed will survive and prosper, and that is the most important thing.

Good article, but I don't see all the piling on as a great danger to the man's career. Aside from battling his addiction, all Rush needs to do is return to the microphone and do what he has always done.

The uglier they get, the more they pay tribute to Rush's career, influence and devotion to truth.

Anyone who has listened to Limbaugh for a substantial length of time as I have knows that Limbaugh much more likes to have fun at his opponents expense than simply call names. And it's true that he is very civil to lib callers who don't rant. His stated mission is to not retire until he's convinced every lib to give it up and turn conservative.

I don't even agree with Rush on everything, although I do agree with his general convictions. I have to believe that most Rush detractors have never or rarely listened to him. Many, like Evan Thomas of Newspeak, are obviously projecting their own inadequacies onto Limbaugh as evidenced by Thomas's latest hit-piece. Thomas is a mouse (or rat) firing a peashooter at an elephant. And if you had to listen to Jonathan Alter for three hours at a crack, you'd take the pipe...no pun intended.

Limbaugh himself presides over his show with a mock-heroic tone full of knowing self-mockery. He is "the all-seeing, the all-knowing Maha-Rushie," with "talent on loan from God." Message to humorless liberals: He doesn't mean it.
That "mock-heroic tone" is a parody of liberal know-it-alls, especially broadcast journalists. Liberals project the attitude that conservatives are stupid--and do so, ironically, by demagogic appeals to prejudice and oversimplified "analyis."
