CBS Series on Homeschooling Tonight & Tomorrow
North Carolina Home Educators ^ | 10/13/03 | Mike Brindle

Posted on 10/13/2003 6:37:24 AM PDT by condi2008

Following discussions that Hal Young, the president of NCHE (North Carolina Home Educators), had on Friday with the CBS Evening News producer, it is anticipated that CBS will be running a 2 part series on Monday & Tuesday evening on homeschooling (The report is already complete, but be mindful that other news may possibly preempt it).

This report is expected to focus on the handful of child abuse cases over the past 5 to 10 years involving "presumed homeschoolers" including the murder/suicide of "Non homeschooled homeschoolers" in Johnston County, NC two years ago. The CBS reporters will be highlighting various murders, suicides, etc. involving "homeschoolers" nationwide and will attempt to argue that "Homeschooling is out of control". The woman producer stated directly to Hal that he "would not be pleased with the report", and that the intent of the report is to encourage further state and federal government regulation of homeschooling.

I encourage you to both watch these reports and pray as we seek to understand the effects of this reporting on homeschooling in North Carolina. Jan & I will be praying over the following:

That the report when aired will be little watched in terms of Market Share and perceived for exactly what it is, a biased attack on homeschooling.
That as with Balaam in the Bible, nothing will said against us that God does not allow.
That the Lord will use this incident for His Glory and our encouragement.

In addition, I encourage you to monitor the sponsors of the commercials surrounding the segment and issue E-mails to the companies involved stating our displeasure with their sponsoring of these sorts of attacks and our intent to consider their sponsorship when making product purchase decisions. E-mail/letters to CBS News itself may also be used, but this route would be expected to be ineffective, as their Editorial Board obviously supports this reporting.

Both NCHE and HSLDA will be monitoring this report closely and you should expect further information from both sources. Please feel free to pass this message to anyone that you desire.

In Christ's Service,

Mike Brindle NCHE Region 12 district director

I'm quite confident that Dan Rather shall be objective on the topic of homeschooling. / SARCASM.

Thanks.

We had a child abuse case recently in my state where the school knew something was going on (the mother showed up to school drunk) yet they did nothing about it as far as reporting her to the state. She killed her son.

Any suggestion that they would balance the story of violence against "non-homeschooled-homeschoolers" with statistics on public school student-on-student battery, gun violence and sexual predators?

Here in N. Florida a 15 year old was sucker punched by a 17 year old, went into a coma and died several days later...in an elementary school, a girl was raped in the bathroom and the principal made comments to the effect that she invited the assault by going into the boys bathroom...somehow, I never saw that on the national news.

Big surprise here. As long as those unqualified parents keep teaching lies to their unsocialized children someone has to speak up. Anyway when they grow up they'll just be malcontents. Its better to nip this homeschool mess in the bud now and get everybody on the same page. Wouldnt want commoners to think for themselves.

As far as the non-homeschooling students in NC, the state requires that homeschoolers register with the state and take annual tests.

These people were truant -- not homeschooling. Homeschooling and truancy are two different things.

What about the criminal teacher's aid that duct taped kids a couple of weeks ago?

Let Rather do a piece on the criminal activities in the public schools by teachers on students. There are plenty of them -- from pedophilia to physical abuse.

Nice to know that the producer of the program admits it's a trash job. So much for objectivity.

I suggest that FOX news do a F&B report on public schools and child abuse.

I've had to delete my original reply because I'm too furious to think straight. I'm certain that whatever my response to this biased piece of &$#%, it'll be way too "colorful". I don't know if I should watch it or not.

What's that? Which blogspot is it on? Do you have the link?

I don't know anyone that has ever referred to that blog...
