You are being overly harsh in my opinion. Romney was just ashamed of his success and this shame made him feel uncomfortable around regular people. It’s a very human quality. I could be wrong, though. And, yes, his awkward attempt to be a player in this election cycle did him no good. The bottom line is his time is done
That's the way I used to think it through. How does his envy, near hatred, of much more successful Trump fit in with that? It doesn't.

A few decades ago, when I played in a band, I got some good advice.
How you act in a small group setting, and how you act on stage are two different things. Your movements and expressions on stage must be exaggerated—almost to the point of outlandishness—for them to have any impact on the audience.
If you act and talk on stage the way you do with a small group, you will come across as not only wooden, but a statue. Cold, untouchable, and unlikeable.
