The GOP primary was a nasty race between the dirty RINO and real conservative, who won. The then incumbent GOP Governor, Bill Graves refused to support the real conservative.

What is rather ironic about that race is that the GOP nominee, then-state Treasurer Shallenberger, was not a doctrinaire conservative. He is solidly conservative on social issues, but on economic issues, is more labor-friendly than most Republicans are. Jim Barnett is a solid conservative who has nevertheless won endorsements from leading state RINO's.
