You know, people like you remind me of the Al Sharpton's of the world - dare to criticize your leaders or your view of things and you immediately label me an anti-southern bigot. Well, you can take that and stick it where the sun don't shine.
My comparison was in response to your clinging to the fact that Davis was never convicted of treason as evidence that no treason was committed. Nonsense. Davis, and the other southern leaders, were all saved by the passage of the 14th Amendment and the opinions of Chief Justice Chase. Davis was charged and indicted for treason. Had he been tried, he would have been convicted and anyone who believes that the federal prosecutor would have taken any chances on any other verdict being returned is being naieve. Even in Virginia 12 men could have been found to convict.
Great American Statesman? Well, Thomas B. Reed first coined the phrase, "A statesman is a politician who's dead" and under that definition Davis certainly qualifies as a statesman. Jefferson was a politician, and being a southern politician he was helped by the fact that he never had to run opposed in any election that he won. In every election where he had an opponent, he lost. A little fun fact for you first thing in the morning.
Davis was like Lincoln, an average man put into a position where he had a chance to rise above his peers. He made his mark, no doubt about that. Having decided on war I can't think of a single southern leader who would have prosecuted the war as long and as hopelessly as Davis did. He kept the war going well over a year and a half after it was clearly lost and has to bear the responsibility for the death and destruction that followed.
The policies of Jefferson Davis in office make the actions of Lincoln that you condemn so much seem like nothing. Davis ignored his constitution's requirements for a judiciary, ignored states rights, nationalized businesses, fought with his government, jailed opponents, silenced newspapers, siezed private property for the war effort, and in general violated almost every principle that the confederacy was supposed to be founded on. Far from being a Great American Statesman, Jefferson Davis was a petty American despot.
