Fragile Supply Chains Threaten U.S. Submarine Production

Submarine production falters when a fragile industrial base cannot deliver the specialized castings, forgings, ceramics, magnetics, steels, and acoustic coatings that nuclear safety and acoustic stealth demand. Unfortunately, the United States relies on a dangerously thin bench of suppliers. The Naval Foundry and Propeller Center (NFPC) remains the Navy’s organic foundry and design reference for submarine propellers.6 But the NFPC alone cannot carry the load, nor was it designed to. Each propulsor involves long-lead steps—patterns, molds, pours, and machining—that stretch timelines even in the best cases. When quality issues arise, such as pour defects, heat-treatment variability, or radiographic anomalies, delays ripple into construction schedules.

Every U.S. submarine depends on hull steels to withstand deep-ocean pressures while retaining weldability, toughness, and predictable performance over decades of service. The supply chain for these steels is narrow. A handful of mills provide the plate, and only a few furnaces can accommodate the sizes and specifications needed for submarine hull sections.9 When multiple Columbia- and Virginia-class boats compete for limited mill and furnace slots, the system operates with almost no slack. A single ultrasonic testing rejection or a weld-procedure requalification can result in weeks or months of delay.

U.S. submarines have a combat advantage because of their silence and ability to detect quiet adversaries. Modern sonar arrays are built on thousands of piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) ceramic transducers, each one converting mechanical vibrations into electrical signals with exquisite sensitivity.13 These ceramics are unforgiving: Small deviations in chemistry or processing can affect performance. Acceptance testing catches defects, but when batches fail, replacements take months to produce and qualify. However, the global industrial base is incredibly shallow. Only a handful of producers worldwide can consistently make PZT ceramics at the volumes and tolerances naval sonar requires.

Here are the second of three articles in the submarine Issue I found interesting.

The financialization of America’s economy, based on printed money, massive debt, trade imbalances, the Eurodollar, and open borders didn’t just “happen.”

Its a political force that benefits certain interests both in the USA, and especially, abroad.

So, what are we doing to increase the number of producers?

They have so many contracts. It takes years to build a sub. Electric Boat just had a huge hire. My grandson works there.

Every time I ask him about something...he mumbles something about..."then I'll have to shoot you".

Dear fellow old person. It’s what we have been taught since the 50s. I was a weapons instructor for 3 years at a SAC base, and we taught: “ Before I can explain something, I have to warn you: I will have to shoot you after I explain what I do. “ “ Sorry, sir but that wass an is the rule..Fellow old man 1954 through the 1980s USAF, later USAFR, 12 years

“a fragile industrial base cannot deliver”

This is one of the MAGA Goals-
Reindustrialize America cuz ya can’t defend yourself if you have to rely on your enemies for materials.

Materials come before production. It is no secret since the Sanctions were put on Russia,we lost many material suppliers.....which is the reason Trump revived our Strategic Minerals and Metals Reserve- Massively.

Reopening Trade and Commerce with Russia enables us to once again procure exotic metals, strategic metals, and much needed resources. Dont Pooh ooh, that, it is happening right now with Diesel. That is just a start.

Disabling and destroying US military capabilities is just on of the Lefts many goals. It is reprehensible to see how low this country has fallen at the hands of those that supposedly took an oath to uphold and defend her.
