A left-wing politician who shares his name with fascist dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini has become the mayor of a Peruvian town – just one year after he resigned from a right-wing populist party.
Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores, 45, prevailed with 34% of the vote in Sunday’s election in Queropalca, running on a center-left ticket for Peru’s Ahora Nacion (Now Nation) party.
It’s unclear when the politician joined the Ahora Nacion party, but he was previously a member of the right-wing Popular Force party before resigning in 2025, according to his candidate declaration form.
Popular Force is a populist movement led by Peru’s president, Keiko Fujimori, who is the daughter of dictator Alberto Fujimori.
Mussolini, who was formerly the manager of the Simeon Sac Investment Group, won the election with 229 votes – 25 votes more than his nearest rival, Gaspar Benilde Osario Zambrano, who represented the right-wing Popular Renewal party.
Just 42 votes separated the top three candidates in Sunday’s ballot, which took place in Queropalca, which consists of 730 people.
The new mayor claims to have received a high school diploma, but it’s unclear if he is university- educated.
He is not the first “Hitler” to win an election, either.
Hitler Alba, who served as mayor of the town of Yungar between 2011 and 2014, ran for election in 2018 and one of his rivals was Lennin Vladimir Rodriguez Valverde.
This election captivated the internet, prompting commenters to dub the contest “Hitler v Lenin,” given the similarity of Valverde’s name to the Soviet Union founder.
