A federal appeals court Wednesday morning halted the execution of the lone woman on Tennessee’s death row about an before it was scheduled to occur.
In a last-minute decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth District said it needed to review claims that Christa Pike’s legal team made in a bid to stop her execution.
“The interests of justice and the finality of Pike’s impending execution compel the entry of a short stay of execution in order to properly analyze the parties’ fully briefed arguments and resolve the issues on the merits,” the court said.
It’s unclear how long the execution may be halted for. It was scheduled for 10 a.m. local time in Nashville.
Both Gov. Bill Lee and the Supreme Court had said they would not stop Pike’s execution.
Before learning Monday that Lee would not be intervening in her case, Pike, 50, wrote in a letter to NBC News, shared by her spiritual adviser: “Whether my clemency is granted or not, I am at peace.”
“I am not afraid to die,” wrote Pike, who has been on death row for over three decades. “I’m only nervous about the process.”

Honestly I thought it was a done deal. I figured if it hadn’t been stopped by now it wasn’t going to be.

Of course the court needed more time. She was only convicted 30 years ago, and is a model prisoner who is completely rehabilitated since she’s only been convicted of attempted murder once for her 2001 attack on a fellow inmate) while incarcerated /s
The Sixth Circuit heard her appeal and denied it in 2018, so at this point, the liberal federal judges are just stalling.
I’ll bet the appeals would drop dramatically if they used fentanyl and gave the condemned non-lethal doses as a sneak preview.

Christa Gail Pike is an American convicted murderer who is incarcerated on death row in Tennessee. In 1995, when she was 18, Pike murdered her 19-year-old Job Corps classmate Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. Pike and two friends led Slemmer into the woods, where they tortured and killed her. In 1996, at the age of 20, Pike was sentenced to death
She is obviously not responsible for her actions because she was not properly treated for DXCD (Double X Chromosome Disorder).
