I believe that I saw this same article/thread and yes pattern matching is basically how LLMs (AI models) actually work. This type of application is what they excel at. And even though this seems to be human like “Super Intelligence”, if you give the model a task that involves actual human like reasoning it can fail in a spectacular way.
One of my favorite uses of AI for entertainment is generating music and in many cases lyrics of basically any style of music. I use a specialized service from https://suno.com/ that is so good that it has been the number one priority of the “music industry” to sue it out of existence. If you consider the mediocre crap that “artists” are producing these days, it is hard to tell the difference most of the time.
This seems like it was created by human creativity and intelligence, but this is all an illusion. I used a program called “Band in a Box” for many years before AI was even a well-known term and it did basically the same thing. “Artists” used it for inspiration and even producing tracks using MIDI instrumentation decades ago.
It is considered to be an AI app. It was not marketed as an AI app when it was originally released, and it did not resemble modern AI apps in its original releases, but it created very similar results. But it was still just mimicking human like creativity without actually possessing it.
40 years ago I was considered competent at office computer management...disk drives, defraging, Simms sticks, shell scripts, server mgmt and the like. As I said, some 40 years ago.
My current desktop PC ran out of HD space when it should have had some 200gb. I could find no reason for it. Using Copilot and a couple days work, ‘we’ finally IDed a rogue Windows program logging endless and mindless entries into a hidden log file. Another part of the problem was having no free space limited the ability to run utility tools to determine the problems and attempt a fix.
The AI would type a command, I’d paste it into an admin window to check this and that and narrow down the issue, repeated over & over. A secondary problem was the drive manufacturer taking a shortcut when configuring drives and partitions, yielding inaccurate drive info via queries. This issue was also corrected.
My out-of-date expertise was of little help on today’s PC environment, so the AI’s help was invaluable. Though - and here’s where the AI limitation comes in - I swear we did the same things over and over but from different directions. A better reasoning AI entity I suspect could have located the root causes much faster.
Anyway, my box works fine now and without an expensive service call or home tech visit.
