The French actor and director had been in unbearable pain since a polypropylene prosthesis was fitted in 2023 after a right groin hernia. Aged 43, he was euthanised this Tuesday in Namur, Belgium.
Actor and director Arnaud Denis, left severely disabled after the insertion of an anti-hernia implant, chose to end his life by euthanasia in Belgium on Tuesday at the age of 43 to put a stop to his suffering, his lawyer Philippe Courtois told AFP.
"The decision taken by Arnaud Denis was made in consultation with three doctors in Namur. His body could no longer carry him. He had lost control of it. Arnaud Denis’s death is the consequence of the intense pain he had been enduring for many months," he added.
Best known for his productions of Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Molière's Les Femmes Savantes, Denis had been suffering since a polypropylene mesh implant was fitted on 17 July 2023 after a right groin hernia.
The operation triggered numerous side effects, which eventually drove him to have the implant removed in the United States in April 2024.
The actor was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis, in the context of ASIA syndrome (an inflammatory reaction linked to exposure to an adjuvant). The implant is thought to have caused persistent inflammation and disrupted his immune system.

I had a hernia operation several years ago... so far, so good, but the whole idea of some mesh device coming unraveled and screwing up my insides is a thought I’ve had once or twice... I’ve heard some nightmarish stories and I’d hate to have my own. For now... I knock on wood.
Euthanasia? Sounds like the ultimate medical abuse.

That happened to a guy I knew at the gym.
In 2024 I had to have an emergency small bowel resection the blockage was caused by hernia repair mesh.
My cousin had a kidney transplant and a hernia addressed with the mesh. It went south and his guts were literally hanging out his right side. Couple years ago, he found a doctor who was willing to try and fix it. He underwent an 8 hour surgery done by three or four surgeons to fix the issue. I think they used mesh again but a different type. So far so good.
I’m almost certain that I have seen lawsuit commercials concerning this. Maybe the families of these poor souls should look into this. Or the victim should, if they live long enough.
I had a temporary colostomy back in 2010. They reversed it three months later. About a year later, I developed an incisional hernia on the left side where the stoma was. They did surgery and put mesh in. My surgeon told me that even with the mesh, it was likely I’d develop another hernia at some point, along the edge of the mesh. I did develop one in my lower abdomen. Had it for quite a while now. I’ve had a couple of doctor’s check it out, but both told me that as long as it doesn’t bother me, I don’t need surgery. I’m a 79 year old woman.
His call. I cannot imagine his pain.
I am not sure, if they need any implant for hernia.
My dad and grandpa both had hernias operated, a long, long time ago, with no implants (they did not exist then) and both did very well.
Maybe they should return to that kind of surgery!
I just had double (inguinal) hernia repair surgery last month. I was not too keen on having mesh implanted in my body, but laparoscopic surgery - which requires mesh - is the only option I had. So far, so good!
He was a man with great talent and many years ahead in his normal lifespan.
Sad this was the only way out of unbearable pain,
