First, let me say plainly that I love the desert and the Arab cultures. But it does shape a timeline the media does not understand because they are talking about something they have never experienced.

Lots of people on @Xย are saying the Saudi East-West pipeline and its pumping stations will be back online in days!?!

I have worked these deserts, in Saudi Arabia and across the Middle East, and that is not how it goes. Even if it is "Expedited", you are still looking at a month at the very least, and realistically one to three.

You have to first understand what the work actually is. This is not a "gas station attendant" tightening a few bolts or replacing a motor.

A pumping station hit by a ballistic missile has to be completely demolished, cleared, re-engineered and rebuilt, from the ground and concrete upwards, often with newer technology because the stations are decades old anyways and the original parts no longer exist.

That means engineering, contractors, subcontractors and sub-subcontractors, each waiting on the one below them, each relying on a supply chain that is nothing like the robust, on-time machine people imagine in Germany or Norway or the West.

Now layer the desert summer heat on top of that (we are still in September where the desert heat burns your feet even with shoes), and this is where the delays compound.

If you are not short on supplies, your truck is stuck in the sand.

If the truck moves, you are waiting on water, or waiting for the temperature to drop, because September in the Saudi desert is so brutal that crews can only work at night or in short bursts before exhaustion and medical emergencies set in.

The skilled labor is largely foreign, Pakistani, Afghan, Indian and others, working under experienced engineers who must be flown in and coordinated and some of those highly skilled workers likely left when the missiles started months ago. So how do you convince them to come back? Sure you have some of your own engineers but the highly skilled ones are always brought in from overseas.

And the rhythm of the day is cultural. There are the Prayer times that take thirty to forty five minutes each, several times a day, if they end up working during the day.

There is a midday rest or naps. These are not flaws, they are how the society works, but they are real hours that Western timelines never account for.

Then the piece almost no one has factored in.

The ports are blocked via Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al Mandeeb. The heavy equipment a rebuild like this needs, the kind that normally arrives by sea ordered from overseas, cannot come by sea now.

It has to be airlifted, which is far more expensive, far slower, and limited by what fits on an aircraft.

Some of this machinery is too large to fly intact, so it must be disassembled, flown in pieces, and reassembled on site. Every one of those steps is a new bottleneck stacked on the last.

I like to look at things from an order of effects point of view so;

1. FIRST, the immediate one, the repair itself drags out to weeks or months, not days, so Saudi export capacity stays crippled far longer than the market expects.

2. Second, the market one, that prolonged outage keeps upward pressure on oil and shipping costs, because the bypass everyone assumed would reopen quickly does not.

3. Third, the strategic one, and this is the part the optimists miss, even a fully repaired pipeline sits under the same threat that broke it. Why would the Houthis not simply hit it again, you bet they will.

They have shown they are less about careful calculation than the IRGC and more about action.

A rebuilt station is just a fresh target, which means the real constraint is NOT the repair time at all, perhaps it never was. It is that you cannot durably fix a node your enemy can strike at will at any time of day regardless of the weather conditions....

So ignore the days talk.

Between the engineering, the desert, the blocked ports and the standing threat of another strike, this is a one-to-three month problem at best, and possibly one that cannot be permanently solved while the war continues at all.

You know what to do, amplify this Signal.

Knowing full well they had Iran across the Strait and the Houthis next door, Saudi Arabia spent fifty billion on their line city, Neom. That is a leader denying reality and living in a fantasy. A real leader would have prioritized safety and security. Fifty billion would have bought drone defenses and enough frigates to escort tankers wherever they needed to go.

Unfortunately, Saudi’s military is a palace guard staffed mostly with family members who like the dress uniform, the status and the pay to be leaders. I doubt many of them have any competence. The last thing you want as an autocrat is a competent, well-armed military as the leader of that might just take your job. Why not? How would you stop him? This is why Arab armies perform like clowns on the battlefield.

And this expert decided to splash social media instead of, say, his colleagues who are working on this why? Does it serve only to help Democrats and EU and Iran against Orange Man Bad?

Oh.

Cui bono. Always.

It seems those drones are capable of pinpoint accuracy. What’s to stop Iran or its surrogates from destroying additional sections? Why after witnessing four years of drone warfare in Ukraine hasn’t the US military either not developed or has not deployed an effective anti drone technology in this war. The result is the mullah regime while battered , remains standing and has been able to choke the world’s energy supplies. This has caused disasterous economic and political consequences in the United States. Its likely to result with the America hating Democrats taking disasterous control of Congress. The lesson of Vietnam has been forgotten. When you commit to any war you either win definitively or you do end up a humiliated loser.

Forget all that.

It takes a while for all the baksheesh to be spread around at every point in the process. That’s the major delay.

Asymmetric wars are a biotch.

The war-groupies haven't figured that out yet.

Out of curiosity I looked it up. That Saudi pipeline is almost 750 miles long. Does a technology even exist that can protect all of it from drones?

It would only take one to get through.

It’s been 40 years since I worked as literal, bottom rung, ditch digger in the construction industry - but sure, it takes time to demo a collapse and rebuild.

My big beef remains the Saudis generally, stupid absolute monarchies specifically, and our longtime leaning on them nationally.

Yes - stealing from generations past “bastards but our bastards” and I understand that the replacement for the ‘house of saud’ would be worse.

The reality is that they’ve got a military budget larger than anyone else in the ME except Israel. They’ve purchased (my RTX stocks them) weaponry that also puts anyone except Israel to shame in the region.

But they’re utterly incompetent.

Slack-jawed Hapsburgs in ghutras.

Everyone on x says that? Amazing. Especially considering the focus is on building temporary bypasses around the damaged sections to get it back on line at 50% it’s normal capacity. Thank goodness we have this dude telling us that everyone on x is saying something nobody else is even considering. And to let us know gas station attendants with wrenches aren’t fixing it. What a revelation.

But they do have the Arab culture of scheduling “insallah” - as God wills it. I heard that described as similar to “maรฑana” but without the Mexican sense of urgency.

โ€œ Reality based on longtime experience. Thanks for posting.โ€
*****************************************************

Yes, long and TYPICAL experience can lead to well founded estimates. But sometimes things become โ€œnon-typicalโ€. An example of this would be the early estimates of how long it would take to fix all the Kuwaiti oil/natural gas wells that Saddam had blown up and set on fire. Early estimates were based upon historical performance in fixing individual oil/natural gas well blow out fires and extrapolating from there. But once HIGHEST URGENCY methods were applied the mission was accomplished far quicker that earlier estimates.

This is not a "gas station attendant" tightening a few bolts or replacing a motor.

Where on earth has this been done since mid last century? This seems too neat and with a bow on it.

The author never gives their credentials just their "experience". That "experience" could be in creative writing.

Time will tell.

โ€œWhen you commit to any warโ€

You mean like THIS:

โ€œthe President is hereby authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the United States and the resources of the Government to carry on war against [insert name of enemy here] ; and, to bring the conflict to a successful termination, all the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Congress of the United States.

And the author does not even address the schedule to get new pumps, motors, engines, switchgear, pipe, saddles, hangers, fittings, control systems, instrumentation, etc., manufactured and delivered. That is not just off-the-shelf stuff sitting in inventory.

I imagine that these desert construction run around the clock, under the lights at night when it is a lot cooler. And high premiums will be paid for the urgently needed labor.
