Doctors call for cigarette-style warning label on GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic due to this ‘very dangerous’ risk
New York Post ^ | Dec. 12, 2025 | McKenzie Beard

There’s trouble brewing beneath the GLP-1 buzz. As Americans embrace blockbuster weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy in record numbers, providers are warning of a troubling ripple effect: patients sliding back into restrictive eating disorders — and others developing them for the first time.

“I think there should be a button that you have to click saying ‘I am consciously making a choice that could really harm my health,’” Dr. Zoe Ross-Nash, a licensed clinical psychologist, told The Post. “Like on cigarette boxes, it says, ‘This could cause cancer.’ OK, well, this [drug] could cause an eating disorder.”

The solemn warning comes amid growing concern about shrinking celebrities — who may or may not be on GLP1s — and whether they’re stick-thinness may fuel a return to early-2000s weight stigma or the “heroin chic” look of the ’90s.

This is the problem with boutique professionals prescribing this stuff. It seems like people get prescribed serious drugs without the doctor knowing the client.

I have been on Mounjaro for a while now. My doctor put me on it because I couldn’t get my blood sugar down—even after losing a bunch of weight. He knows me. We discussed my habits. I showed him proof of my diet and exercise. We made the decision together…and we discussed that it was an aide, and that I needed to continue to work to get my weight down to goal.

I cannot imagine his doing that if he knew I had a history of a freakin’ eating disorder.

It’s not the drugs fault. It’s not the drug company’s fault. It’s not Hollywood’s fault. It’s morons. It’s a healthcare system that isn’t allowed to “know” their patients.

So many people taking GLP-1 drugs. Very dangerous.

I know of someone that had kidney failure from taking the GLP-1 drug and is
now on dialysis.

In America, only the stupid and mentally ill do not eat enough to sustain themselves.

Warning label on a med that does what it’s supposed to do?

Sheesh.

Overview of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Kidney Health

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), including semaglutide, are medications primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes. Recent studies indicate that these drugs may also help slow the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with diabetes.

Good enough. Now when is the government going to require health warnings on marijuana smoking and related products?

Don’t these patients already have an eating disorder?

The government will never want to do it since they’re so into pushing it. Besides the majority of pot even in states where it’s legal comes through illegal channels. Do you think the dealer is going to put a warning label on his baggie?

Wait, the warning is you may lose too much weight due your mental illness to look too thin?

How about a warning, if you stop taking this medicine you can became a fat lard butt again and risk diabetes, high blood pressure, and a terrible case of the uglies.

Does everyone prescribed the glp-1 have an 'eating' disorder?

Beside being used to reduce weight, Ozempic is prescribe for diabetics. Some diabetics are overweight, some not.

Ridiculous. GLP-1s are taken by 11% of the adult population in the US and are pretty effective at getting people to lose weight. That’s a very good thing in a country with an obesity epidemic like we’ve had for the last 30+ years. Obesity has a number of very negative health consequences so anything that helps get the pounds off is a big net positive.

These drugs, as expensive as they are, have been shown to be effective and there is a great demand for them. People who are overweight, hypertensive, diabetic or have lower limb osteoarthritis are often very frustrated and have a great need to lose weight. However there is an old caveat when new drugs or therapies appear. Lets see what happens after five years of widespread experience with the drug. Post marketing studies and experiences often tell the truth. These weight loss drugs inhibit pathways that have evolved over fifty million years to ensure nutrition. What really happens when we interfere with natural, well established digestive and food seeking pathways? There have been some spectacular, short term successes but also some disturbing side effects. Suspect the final story is not yet been written.

Two people in my neighborhood took that stuff and look great.

The difference is that the woman who took it is sane, pleasant and doesn’t call attention to herself. The man, who once had a bit part that lasted 49 seconds in some Ho’wood movie is so full of himself it’s hard to get him to STFU about it.

Overeating is not my problem and I don’t understand it. Forgetting to eat is getting is to be a problem.

I dispense these drugs and they come with some very serious side effects, like bowel perforation due to constipation, blindess, nausea, vomiting, and kidney failure.

What it comes down to is people, ones who are not diabetic, are lazy. Like my mom, they want an easy out. They don’t want to exercise, they want to eat whatever they want, however much they can, not put in work, and still lose weight. These drugs should not be paid for by insurance or prescribed solely for weight loss.

A large amount of drugs dispensed from us are these GLP-1’s, and only a small portion of these people are taking it for their glucose and A1C. Most are taking it to lose weight.

Lazy.

Even if they’re only taking it to lose weight....if they are significantly overweight and the drugs do cause them to lose the pounds, that is good for the vast vast majority of them.

It means lower risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, etc.
