On July 14, 2025, United States Marshalls entered the home of 49-year-old Tennessee woman Angela Lipps and arrested her in front of four young children that she was babysitting.
Authorities believed that Lipps had defrauded a series of North Dakota banks. That’s because the West Fargo Police Department had fed a photo ID used by the suspect into Clearview AI—a database with billions of pictures, many scraped from the internet, intended to aid law enforcement investigation. Lipps had been flagged as a match.
But the Tennessee grandmother had never even been to North Dakota.
And so for five months, she sat in jail because of an AI-inspired wrongful arrest.
According to a GoFundMe set up in Lipp’s name (and verified by her attorney, Eric Rice), Lipps made multiple bank transactions that prove she was in Tennessee the entire time. She claims she was released from jail after five minutes of conversation with a detective explaining as much.
In a written statement to A&E Crime + Investigation, interim Fargo Police Department Chief Travis Stefonowicz said that the department had “conducted a comprehensive internal review” and that “our initial investigation could have been more complete.” He further added that, in the time since, the department had adopted a formal policy around facial recognition technology. Stefonowicz stopped short of apologizing to Lipps or clearing her name, adding that “charges may be re-filed if additional investigation supports doing so."

Mighty white of you.....

sounds to me like the perfect invitation to sue the SOBs for a few million dollars, you know to clear her name ...
I am sorry but at only 49 and she looks rode hard and put away wet
I agree. She needs to sue them for several million.
What they’ve done to her is a total disgrace.
They need to take AI and put it in jail instead.
No AI will ever replace the human mind.
She’s clearly a criminal mastermind.
Sadly, police and investigators need suspension and or removal.
This is sick!
Iron clad lawsuit, lawyers will be fighting for position at her doorstep.
I think she is owed at least $1m per day.
The story about Ms. Lipps received a fair amount of coverage in the Fargo Forum. Two items stand out-she was released from jail on a very cold day and she had no warm clothes to wear. Also, she did not have any money to purchase an airline ticket to get home. Her attorney used his personal funds to fly her home.
He can’t admit that he was grotesquely wrong or he throws the civil suit right on the spot.
So he tries to throw shade and leave some lingering doubt
The unpleasant reality is that we live in a fascist state. Now the lazy SOB who let AI conduct the investigation for him will claim qualified immunity.

People need to learn more about routine things like that, taking prisoners in without shoes, no blankets in a jail during winter, no medical treatment even when they can see the wound or injury, there is a whole lot of subtle torture and mistreatment involved with cops that shouldn’t happen, innocent or guilty, cops like to take their pound of flesh.
Excellent observations!!
She needs to become very wealthy.
If hard physical evidence can not back up anything from AI or cameras no arrests should be made ever be made
Oh, then what they did to her is ok then. 🙄
Nope, not at all...just that the poor girl looks old beyond her years. As for the AI and the popos—should all be sued straight to oblivion...Such a strange Kafkaesque predicament.
In Lipps’s bank fraud case, Wessler says, “Police had fingerprint and DNA evidence from the perpetrator. Maybe they should check the alibi. Maybe they should get a warrant for cellphone location history. If police were to get an anonymous tip, they’d do all kinds of things to corroborate or discorroborate it. And that’s what they should do here, because that’s about how reliable [this technology] is. Sometimes face recognition will get it right. But a lot of times, it’ll get it wrong.”

Nah,
Why check the fingerprints when you have facial recognition data?/s
Just hold her for 5 months then act like “we don’t give a shit.”
AI sis not send her to jail.
New Hanover Co just canceled its contract with Flock cameras. A member of LE accessed records and everyone was complaining about the invasion of privacy. Hopefully, other counties and cities follow suit.
