An attempted robbery on Sunday evening on Kanfei Nesharim Street in Jerusalem's Givat Shaul neighborhood ended in a shooting.
According to witnesses at the scene, a civilian who was withdrawing cash from an ATM was attacked by a mugger armed with a knife. The victim pulled out his pistol and shot the mugger.
According to the witnesses, the civilian finished withdrawing cash when the robber approached him holding a knife and attempted to take the cash. In response, the civilian pulled out his gun and shot at the suspect.
The suspect, a 30-year-old man, was severely wounded. Magen David Adom paramedics and EMTs evacuated the suspected thief to Sha'are Zedek Medical Center in severe condition with penetrating wounds.
Officers from the Moriah Police Station arrived at the scene and opened an investigation. Following an initial inquiry, police confirmed that the incident was an attempted robbery during which the suspect was shot by one of those involved.

One of my favorite Michigan authors the late Elmore Leonard promoted the idea of always administering a “kill shot.”
Not leaving an unconscious lackey who later would wake up and take a hostage. Not a POS who had to be given medical treatment and recovery in a hospital. Dead.
Knives and gun fights don’t mix.
I cannot resist giving the Untouchables line about not bringing a knife to a gun fight.
Well they don’t name the mugger.
So, I’ll assume the mugger is an Arab Muslim, given the censorship tendencies of all media.
His application for the Mafia must gave failed.
Or, directly to this instance, Always bring a gun to a knife fight.
A better reason is that if the suspect is merely wounded, there will be two stories out there, and if in the US, likely to hire a lawyer to sue.
If the suspect is dead, the cops are only going to hear one story - yours, and a civil suit is much less likely (although not impossible from a relative hiring a shyster).
If it was an Arab, they would have named him.

I thought Israel had very restrictive gun laws, that being one reason the 2023 Hamas massacre of civilians got as far as it did.
Was the gun guy here an off-duty cop or a reservist? Or has Israel loosened their gun laws?

Carrying is common place. The gun laws are not all that much restrictive. A veteran can usually get a permit, and there are plenty of veterans, so can someone living in Judah and Samaria, and security guards. But you have to have been a citizen for at least three years before applying for a permit, and there’s only one office in Jerusalem at which you can apply.
Could just as well have been an Arab Christian, who can be pretty low notwithstanding (our former neighbors used to deal out of our building), or a Russian, or a Jew of any sort. Diversity is our strength!;D

I remember in 2012 when we went to Israel for my sisters wedding. We went to the Western Wall and I had to go to the bathroom, saw IDF soldiers inside carrying their rifles was really cool to see
