A chunk of the Kennedy Center’s ceiling collapsed after a vicious storm plowed through Washington DC, leading a spokesperson to call it another “urgent” reason why the performing arts center needs to be overhauled.
Debris was scattered on the building’s red carpet in its Grand Foyer, images of the damage online revealed.
Kennedy Center spokesman Roma Daravai said it was “another example of the urgent need to close for renovation and revitalization, as our Chairman President Trump has championed.”
She said the failure comes from “decades of neglect and deferred maintenance by the previous leadership” — and called the building a danger to the public.
“No legitimate reason to further halt the renovations!!” Daravai posted on X.
The damage comes during ongoing litigation over the future of the Center, which its board wants to close for two years for renovations, which it claims are desperately needed.

I don’t think Trump would have built anything that looks that tacky.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s something to do with old materials. My town in PA had old buildings wooden boards collapse, caused by the vibration of jackhammers being used to tear up the old sidewalks because they were being replaced. The buildings that had the ceiling collapse were over 60 years old.

I think the roof is probably leaking causing water to infiltrate behind the plaster.
Perhaps a leaky flat roof. Dry rot in old roof decking, rolled roofing fails, water ponds, and leaks underneath and all the old insulation and roofing materials soak up the water. These get heavy and the ceiling fails. Something like that.

President Trump said back in early 2025 that the Kennedy Center was in “tremendous disrepair” and that the original build was poorly done. As someone who has put up a lot of buildings over the decades, President Trump knows a thing or two about constructing buildings that last.
I remember when they were building it and they did public appeals for donations based on it being a memorial to JFK. It was touted as privately funded but it turned out that a good 70 percent came from taxpayer funds and government bonds. Oh, there were the “kids giving their sticky pennies in school” stories and how generous the Kennedy family was (they gave a total of $ 500,000) but the main source was still the US taxpayer. Unless Trump is involved in the fundraising, we taxpayers will be the ones footing the bill for the renovation.
