🤯 WOW! Comcast made Wi-Fi motion sensing a headline feature on millions of Xfinity gateways. Your router reads the ripples your body makes in the signal: which room you’re in, standing or lying down, through walls, no camera, no light. And the fine print says motion data can go to law enforcement “without further notice to you.”
The Short Version: Open your router app, hunt for anything labeled motion, sensing or Shield, and turn off what you didn’t turn on. Steps below.
I bet you never thought of this. Comcast and others hope you never do. Let me explain.
Every Wi-Fi signal in your house bounces off the walls, the couch and you. Wi-Fi sensing reads the ripples your body makes. A few weeks of that, and the box knows when you wake up, when the house sits empty and which nights you fell asleep in the recliner.
That’s not a motion alert. That’s a diary.
Researchers have identified specific people by their signal ripple with near-perfect accuracy. Not “someone’s home.” You.
📶 The walls have eyes Comcast’s new Xfinity Shield turns any XB7-or-newer gateway into a motion detector, free. Your printer, smart plugs and Xbox become the sensors. $15 a month adds a camera and 24/7 response. Comcast’s pitch: “The network should do more than connect devices.” Linksys sells a version called Aware.
Now the fine print.
Comcast’s policy says it may disclose Wi-Fi motion data “without further notice to you” for any law enforcement investigation, any dispute Comcast is in or a subpoena. Comcast says it doesn’t monitor the motion. Fine. The door’s still open. Your camera has a light. Your mic has a rule. This has neither.
Bright side: This can catch Grandma’s fall without a camera in her bathroom. Used with consent, I like it. Used quietly, I don’t.

For a Wi-Fi Sensing software stack to work effectively, it must access and interpret CSI. However, this is challenging when the chipsets aren’t designed for this purpose, as CSI loses its usefulness once the data is received and demodulated, having traditionally been limited to the physical (PHY) layer to assist the receiver. As a result, integration is a case-by-case effort, requiring close collaboration with Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to evaluate and customize each chipset series.”

Constitutional Attorney question: if Comcast is operating under a FCC license, would this be, by extension, a violation of the Fourth Amendment, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
AI says this feature is optional. Opt-in only: The feature is disabled by default and must be turned on manually inside the mobile app.
They’re selling this a way to monitor you home when you’re away.

I’m sitting in a chair by a table by a bedroom wall. My cellphone is on the other side of the wall in the bathroom about three feet away.
The Wi-Fi signal path is invariant.
Comcast’s work in our neighborhood knocked out our entire Internet service over the weekend! A technician came to our home today and restored our service.
Could Comcast’s router work have been responsible for our service interruption?

Thanks for the link - took a look. Nice quick and dirty intro. I’m familiar with basic beamforming; phased-array radars.
Just bought a replacement router that claims beamforming capability. The fallout looks interesting, but not cheerful about the motion detection and classifying.

I haven’t used ISP WiFi for more than a dozen years at this point. Haven’t used their routers for 5-1/2.
That “free” ISP router/AP/switch/AIO is worth what you paid for it. Same for $10/month.
Turn off wifi on the ISP’s router and use your own access point or points. Or, dump the router entirely and get your own.
Just breathing changes the path. Your body is a big bag of saltwater.
