The disconnect between American blacks and Africa is profound, and it stunts their cultural development. A powerful strand of American black culture romanticizes Africa as an ancestral homeland, even though Africans themselves played an indispensable role in selling other Africans into slavery.
At the same time, many African immigrants look with disdain on the ghetto culture that developed in parts of black America during the second half of the 20th century.
And then there is the strangest irony of all: While some Africans reject that culture, others eagerly imitate it.
There’s a lot to unpack here.
The Atlantic slave trade would not have existed without African complicity. The traders—first overwhelmingly Arab and African, and later European—who bought slaves on the African coast generally did not travel deep into the continent to capture them. African rulers, armies, raiders, and traders supplied the men, women, and children sold into slavery.

since the 1960s, a powerful strain of black activist culture in America has encouraged blacks to identify emotionally with Africa rather than with America, often imagining the continent as a repository of lost dignity and racial authenticity.
The striking thing is that many Africans do not return the compliment.
African immigrants have long looked critically at elements of American black culture. According to a recent study, written in almost impenetrable academese, many African immigrant families place enormous importance on education, family formation, work, and upward mobility. They often see America as a land of opportunity rather than oppression and deliberately distance themselves from what they see as destructive American black attitudes and behaviors.
That makes the current viral popularity of African videos mocking American ghetto culture especially interesting.

I’ve heard Nigerians in particular can’t stand American blacks and don’t understand their aversion to taking their studies seriously.

I worked closely with a Nigerian who kept bitching about his wife. Then we separated for 15 years, but wound up working together again. I asked him about his wife (an black American), he said he dumped her and went home to get another wife. So I asked about the new wife - he said she was great.
I suspect most American guys would have warned him about American Woman (regardless of skin color) and saved him all of that hassle.
Yes, they certainly do.
Typically, whenever I see an American Black, I get a bad feeling - probably because they were taught to hate “the white man” as they were growing up. On the other hand, I do NOT get a bad feeling when I see someone who is truly from Africa. They have not been brought up to hate “the white man,” and their attitude is completely different - they are just normal people. I have worked with both kinds of Blacks. The American Blacks were very race-conscious while the African Blacks were just normal people. Weird.
Back around 1980 I worked a summer job with a guy from Uganda. He told me how much he hated American blacks, only he didn’t use that word.
I know a guy in my parish from Kenya. He works awful hours in a nursing home, lives in a dinky apartment, and drives a beat up car but, compared to living in Kenya, he thinks he’s in heaven.
A kid at my son’s high school was the son of two Nigerian Doctors. He was good at math, such that he was selected to a county-wide advanced math class for middle and high-schoolers held/taught 3X a week at the local public university.
Suffice it to say, his friends were all east-asian and white kids
He was also accepted to 7 Ivy League schools (every one he applied to)
these stories remind me of the Reeeeeveeeraaaand Jackson....
He doesnt give a rats ass about black people, he just uses their stupidity to get rich off of. Blacks do the same thing for anything they appear to support. its all fake. just another grift.
Especially those Africans from Mohammed el-Sayed’s home country of Egypt.
Africans sold the ancestors of American blacks to the slavers and considered them as inferior tribes back then.
American blacks are the most spoiled blacks on the planet.
The slaves that worked in the big house on the plantation, looked down on the field slaves. As well, the black soldiers, most who had been born free, that enlisted in the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantries, which Lincoln had authorized to be raised in the north during the Civil War, wanted nothing to do with the contraband units from the south.
A long time ago, there was the idea of the “talented tenth” — that top percentage of blacks would succeed in the wider world and then help to pull up the rest of black society by convincing white America that blacks had talent and brains and ability. All their hopes were on that vanguard of the talented tenth.
Nowadays, the leading blacks (Jackson, Sharpton, Obama, etc.) are focused on making money off the stupidity of some black people. Gotta fleece those rubes. That’s what the “leaders” are all about today.
The way I describe it is that Africans don’t seem to have the same pathologies that “African” Americans do.
He's not doing that anymore. He finally croaked this past February during black history month.
Son had a favorite English teacher in Jr. college (black guy) who transferred to Compton College (SoCal). Son then took his class there where son was witness to a guy from Nigeria who burst out laughing when the locals complained about living in a ghetto. “A ghetto? You call this a ghetto with your cell phones and tv’s and etc…”
Your comment makes me think of a legend I heard. Apparently it was a tradition what when a black man made it out of the ghetto through his success, he would choose a young black man from the neighborhood in whom he saw similar potential. He would mentor the young man and even pay for much of his education with the expectation that he’d succeed and continue the tradition.
I assume that tradition is either just a legend or has for the most part gone by the wayside.
I had a coworker years ago from Nigeria. He was so black that he almost looked blue. Smart as crap and spoke the King’s English. If you heard him on the phone you would never guess he was black. He despised American Blacks with a passion.
