USC issues statement on poor home opener attendance after images of empty LA Coliseum go viral

It seems that everyone has now seen pictures of a barren Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for USC’s home opener against the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday. In fact, the poor attendance for Lincoln Riley’s Trojan squad got so much attention that the university itself felt the need to issue a statement in response.

In a statement to USA Today, USC reiterated the “high expectations” it has for its home crowds and reassured the public that LA Coliseum will have a better atmosphere throughout the rest of the season.

“We understand the factors that impacted Saturday’s attendance,” the statement read. “We have high expectations and a premier home schedule this season, and we know the competitive advantage an electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season.”

Several non-football factors were partly to blame for the lackluster crowd on Saturday. For one, it was a Week 0 game that kicked off at noon local time. Football season hasn’t even begun in earnest, and it clearly wasn’t front of mind for those in Southern California on Saturday. Quality of the opponent also played a role.

14th in the nation and a high school attendance. Meanwhile, App State has a losing season and has 110% attendance.

Rumor has it, to raise attendance, they’ll let homeless camp on the sidelines and behind the endzones.

They claim 51,144 in attendance, but that number has been challenged.

Plus the first three thousand homeless that have meth addiction (provable by state identification cross-referenced with the pay to play voter registration efforts) get free teeth at half-price.

I’m in the football business and i enjoyed going to LA because i could catch two CFB games in one day- such was the case in 1995...

I saw Washington State-USC at noon...USC was ranked #5 in the nation, it was the week before they played Notre Dame and they were undefeated...there were maybe 30,000 people at the game...i went to watch Keyshawn Johnson among others but it was DT Darrell Russell who blew me away (and he was a true sophomore)...

After that i drove to Pasadena for a 7PM contest between Arizona and UCLA...there were maybe 25,000 people on hand....Jonathan Ogden blew me away and i knew from that point he had HOF potential...

Los Angeles has always been the worst sports town in America, closely followed by Miami....
