"Skills matter more than simply earning a degree"
VOV.VN - Vietnam is moving to place greater emphasis on job skills, practical ability and adaptability rather than academic degrees, as a new government plan seeks to raise labour productivity and build a more modern and efficient labour market.
Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra on August 30 signed a decision, issuing a plan to implement Conclusion 62 of the Party Central Committee Secretariat on improving national labour productivity alongside the development of a synchronised, modern and efficient labour market.
The plan sets out eight groups of tasks and solutions aimed at improving labour productivity and contributing to the Government’s goal of achieving double-digit economic growth.
One of its most notable directions is a change in how workforce quality is assessed. The plan calls for a shift from emphasising academic qualifications toward occupational skills, practical capability, adaptability and work performance, while promoting lifelong learning so workers can regularly retrain and upgrade their skills...

AI will do the thinking we just need wrench turners to keep this running
Learn a trade and you’ll be in like Ho Chi Minh
The US would do wellto also embrace this attitude.
Vietnam got smart in the mid-80s and realized that Communism doesn’t work. Ho Chi Minh is turning over in his Mausoleum.
Already happening. Smaller colleges are closing.
“we just need wrench turners to keep this running”
Right now AI needs people aware of the variety of data to make sure that AI is not dependent on the narrow slant of data that it is fed.
From micro-biololgy to astronomy to politics and religion we see what we thought 50 years ago ... or even 10 years ago... just isn’t so.
AI needs to be taught humility and admit that it is smart ... like a 6th grader is smart... but constantly has more to learn.
As a US manufacturer who has lost business to Vietnamese producers since covid hysteria peaked in 2022, this isn’t great news.
Oh Well. “Them’s the Breaks.”
However, their production potential will never rival what China has already accomplished in the manufacturing sector.
For any American manufacturer the “foreign storm has been weathered.”
U.S. should follow suit, what nation needs and aboundance of degrees in black studies, or g and l life studies or any number of useless degrees yes even liberal arts. Train to fill a good paying job in the future.
Everyone should do this. The university system has outlived its usefulness.
“”The US would do well to also embrace this attitude.””
Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) is doing his best to achieve this..He’s made a lot of progress and needs to continue. He announced that he has millions of dollars in scholarships available for the trades. Hope the young people and their parents are listening....
I believe you meant your first sentence to be a question...
American families discovered it was more efficient to convert their family savings to cash and toss it down into the curbside drain openings. College took longer to waste the money.
Go into the trades or start your own business.
It used to be that you can study to become a "professional" or go in the military but that is no longer possible today.
Everyone should do this. The university system has outlived its usefulness.

The problem is the bankers & government entities are being pussies and continue to fund these “Woke DEI business structures” both public & private. Which is distorting the proper alignment between capital & labor.
The nonessential 50 year economic bloat continues to be funded, while neglecting the essential producers & people that can maintenance our current level of civilization.
They better start changing what they’re doing or another economic meltdown will occur in 2030’s.
Too many women’s studies grads and no medical practitioners, electricians etc....
What’s the world coming to when Communist Vietnam has better education advice for their young than our Communist Democrats do? Oh well, never underestimate our DemocRATs’ ability to out-idiot any other Communist party in their constant quest to do the worst of any economic and social system.
