Ohio abortion rights group raises concern that Flock could be used to track patients

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A reproductive rights group is raising concern that Flock automated license plate readers could be used to track abortion patients in Columbus.

On Aug. 10, Columbus City Council had a hearing to receive community feedback on Flock cameras, which capture vehicle details and license plates. The technology is often used by police to track suspects and missing people.

The council meeting was spurred by growing local scrutiny of the cameras over concerns about privacy and data sharing with federal immigration enforcement.

Abortion Forward Deputy Director Jaime Miracle spoke at the hearing, urging the council to remove all of the city’s automated license plate readers (ALPRs). She argued that people seeking abortions in Columbus from states where the procedure is illegal or restricted could be tracked with the city’s cameras and potentially prosecuted.

“Ensure that people coming to our city to get the abortion care they need are protected from vindictive and intrusive investigation and prosecution by their home state,” she said. “The only way to make that happen is to end the contract with Flock and permanently remove all ALPRs.”

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion. Thereafter, Ohio’s six-week abortion ban went into effect for about 82 days. The six-week ban was ultimately put on hold by an Ohio judge, and then in November 2023, Ohio voters passed an amendment enshrining the right to abortion in the state’s constitution.

In the midst of the six-week ban taking effect in 2022, Columbus passed a resolution that states “city funds will not be used to … provide information to any other governmental body or agency about any abortion” or to “conduct surveillance or collect information …

I thought abortion was legal in Ohio, so why do they care if they are caught on Candid Camera?

According to them they do not sell data...

Their whole business is selling “data”!! The key sentence there at the link is “Flock does not sell camera data to any third party.” It is a semantics thing...Flock sells specific “city A” license plate data to the P.D. in “city A” and promises not to sell the same exact license plate data set to another party, but the raw data (including RF-derived personal device MAC address data, audio, video, face recognition data, etc.) resides on their “Cloud/”AI/servers and IS sold in a “re-packaged” form to many others nationwide.

“According to them they do not sell data”

And according to Fauci, vaccines prevent Covid.

Even if they don’t sell data, just one bad actor with access to the cameras’ data can result in the harassment and/or death to others. And that has happened already.

My opinion is that it’s going to be used as a weapon by the government to control and persecute citizens. And it’s interesting that the Flock Camera issue coincides with the issue of massive data centers. Gotta have some place to store information.

why do they care if they are caught on Candid Camera?

The concern from the abortion crowd is that someone in one state where it's illegal gets charged for traveling to another state to get one.

I don't know of any particular case that covers that scenario. The worry popped up over a Texas case where police were asked to search for a woman because she took an abortion pill and had a lot of blood loss.

On the other hand it could also be used to identify the sidewalk warriors.
Its a problem for both sides.

They know that a lot of people who would kill their babies also commit a lot of crimes and they want to help them get away so they can kill another baby later on. It's a business decision.

But of course this is a subset of the objection that Flock can be used to track anybody for any reason. And that’s not restricted to officially approved reasons either.
