Dashcam shows runaway tire fly into 405 Fwy traffic seconds before deadly crash

Dashcam footage from a Tesla appears to show a runaway tire flying over the center divider of the 405 Freeway and into oncoming traffic moments before a fatal motorcycle crash Wednesday in the San Fernando Valley.

The incident occurred just before 11:20 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway near Burbank Boulevard, north of the 101 Freeway.

In the dashcam video, what appears to be a stray tire can be seen bouncing over the center divider and into the far-left southbound lane. The tire then moves out of the camera’s frame. Seconds later, a motorcyclist is seen falling from the motorcycle and sliding into traffic, where he is run over by a driver in a white Toyota SUV.

And those d*mn flying tires will be soon controlled by California’s anti-tire-initiative!

That’s horrible. On the video it’s absolutely a runaway tire. I’ve seen lots of retreads lose their caps, but I’ve never seen a runaway tire like that. I wonder if it came off of a truck that was carrying tires? That poor motorcyclist was just living his life one moment, and then that. Absolutely horrible.

Several years ago I had an unsecured spare tire on the bed of a trailer while I was going down a country road. I just happened to be looking in the rear view mirror when the tire fell off the trailer. It bounced so high it was above the mirrors field of view, then went flying probably a hundred feet or so into a field of tall grass. I went looking for it and could not find it.

I suspect something similar happened here, only with deadly results. The tire likely fell off the bed of a work truck or trailer. We are talking about an object of about 30 or 40 pounds flying at about 50+ mph. That’s a lot of energy. That alone could have been enough to kill the motorcycle guy.

I can’t see how they could fault the Toyota driver that ran over him. However this is Kalifornia, and if he turns out to be Republican in that gas guzzling polluting SUV, then he’s definitely at fault and subject to voluntary manslaughter charges, maybe even murder one. They might even revive the death penalty, just for him.

Looked like an entire wheel and tire ... not just a tire. Poor biker.

I remember the time when I was behind a Mustang that lost it’s left front wheel. It flew up in the air, at least 20 feet, and came down about 10 feet to my left. I was driving a convertible at the time, if it had hit my roof, I would have been in deep trouble.

The tire kept bouncing down the road and the last thing I saw was the driver of the Mustang getting out with a WTF expression on his face.

Since then, there have been two times when someone failed to properly tighten the lug nuts on my own car. One was a tire shop and the other was a dealership. Both are gone now.

Please people, whenever someone has wheels off your car, ALWAYS check the lug nuts to make sure they are tight, but not overtightened. Invest in a torque wrench!

Such a sad story - heard there was a fatal accident on the 405 yesterday - and this was it.

Surprised the tire could get up such speed given that the 405 in that area is usually a parking lot.

So sorry for the innocent motorcyclist - husband rode motorcycles for decades on that very freeway, I never stopped worrying.

It was probably around 1971 or 72, my brother was driving home from work, on the freeway, in Southern California. An intact tire and wheel came across from the southbound lanes and hit his car, making him crash into a guardrail and totaling the car; he was fine, as the tire hit on the passenger side of the hood. The tire had come off a poorly-maintained vehicle being driven by an illegal alien. It was one of the vehicles wheels, not a spare he was carrying. They have been a scourge for a very long time.

I've seen lots of retreads lose their caps, but I've never seen a runaway tire like that.

And what are the chances of a runaway tire finds a motorcycle.

This exact thing happened to me while driving on another freeway in SoCal. The tire started bouncing across all lanes. If I was a few seconds later, I would have been a target. Fortunately in this case, the tire missed all the cars coming behind me. Its odd but it does happen.

Complete wheel tire assemblies come off too frequently. Its usually trailer tires with boat trailers being the worse. Submerged in water and poor maintenance and boat trailers tires/wheels come off the trailer. I’ve seen them jump fences, median walls and sometimes they start fires due to hot failed bearings.
People go pick up boats that have not had maintenance on the trailers in years. Broke down on the side of the road, could have been a Jimmy Buffet song….
