What jobs do data centers actually create? 

It is a question increasingly on Americans’ minds as public opinion turns against data centers, their construction, environmental footprint, energy and water use, and uncertain local economic benefits. Yet in an era when President Trump has promised to reindustrialize America, many people are asking a simpler question: what good jobs will these facilities actually provide?

First, it is important to remember that jobs should not be the primary metric for evaluating any infrastructure project. Treating them as such is reminiscent of the public-works programs of the 1930s under FDR, when the focus often shifted away from building what people needed, toward employing as many people as possible. Conservatives should understand that a jobs program is not the purpose of economic development. 

Second, it is wrong to assume data centers, by themselves, must be massive job creators to justify their existence. The same criticism could be leveled at power lines, nuclear reactors, bridges, and other essential infrastructure projects. It may be technically true that they employ relatively few people once complete, but it also misses the point entirely.

Now, onto the jobs data centers do, in fact, provide. 

The answer begins with construction. Building a large data center requires electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, heavy-equipment operators, steelworkers, concrete workers, engineers, project managers, security personnel, and other skilled trades. Those jobs are temporary, but major projects can take years to complete and can employ hundreds or thousands of workers across the life of the build. Construction is, in fact, where most of the immediate employment effect occurs.

Now, onto the more disputed question of long-term jobs. Data centers do create permanent local employment, even if they are not labor-intensive in the manner of an old-fashioned factory. A Brookings analysis found that, over the first decade after a county receives its first large data center, employment in data processing rose 56 percent and employment in telecommunications rose 43 percent. In a typical county, those gains translate to roughly 100 to 200 additional jobs, depending on the type of facility. 

The permanent jobs are also quite varied. Data centers need data-center technicians to install, test, repair, and maintain servers; network engineers and fiber technicians to keep enormous volumes of data moving; electrical and mechanical technicians to maintain generators, batteries, and power-distribution equipment. They need HVAC and cooling-system specialists to keep equipment from overheating; critical-facilities engineers and chief engineers to oversee the site’s core systems; operations managers; logistics and inventory personnel; and physical-security staff. Major operators also hire cybersecurity specialists, safety professionals, contractors, and vendor-management personnel to keep a facility reliable around the clock.

That covers the jobs inside the data centers themselves. What is discussed far less often is the broader employment these facilities can make possible across the technology sector, and across the economy as a whole. As computing capacity becomes more available, startups can build products that would otherwise be too expensive or too difficult to launch. Established companies can create new AI teams, develop new products, and take on projects that previously would not have made economic sense. That means more work not only for software engineers, data scientists, product managers, and cybersecurity specialists, but for the electricians, plumbers, construction workers, equipment technicians, and other tradesmen needed to build and sustain the infrastructure behind that growth.

The jobs a data center provides must be measured beyond the workers immediately inside the physical building. The benefits are broader and longer-term, even if much of the public debate is understandably focused on the immediate disruption: the construction, the land use, the power demand, and the number of local people hired on day one. 

Of course, none of this means AI will leave every already existing job untouched. It will automate certain tasks, eliminate some roles, and force workers and companies to adapt to a new economy. But that has been true of every new technology. The relevant question is whether America will build the infrastructure, develop the skills, and create the new industries needed to turn that disruption into greater productivity and broader opportunity.

A data center may not resemble a mid-century factory, with thousands of workers clocking in every morning to work an assembly line. But that is because the economy is changing, not because these facilities are useless. If AI is the next industrial revolution, then data centers are among the factories of that revolution, the infrastructure that makes a new generation of products, companies, and industries possible. The question should not be whether every data center creates the same kind of jobs as a factory did in 1955. It plainly does not. 

The question is whether America wants to build the capacity to lead in the industries of the future, or allow fear of change and an outdated definition of “good jobs” to leave that work, that investment, and that leadership to someone else.

datacenters or what I might call HyperScale create lots of jobs.

now just because there is a data center being built in some random place lets just call it Malaga does not mean there will be tons of jobs there.

Sure there are lots of construction jobs in the beginning, and there are people who realize there will be maybe 40 or more jobs that will have decent pay and those people will want to build houses or buy houses, and need extra infrastructure.

That is the minor job impact. The companies who build racks, network gear, servers, the oem companies who make the processors, ram and hard drives all have been adding employees to handle the demand.

I don’t know how many foundries have been built in us yet, but I know there has been some push to do that, which also will create jobs.

Then there is the surveillance state that is about to go on a massive hiring spree so they can analyze all the collected location, social media, and digital currency data and sure in the beginning mostly as make-work, well until things get really fun for everyone.

good points, all. the question is does the neighborhood taxpayer have to subsidize (in all the myriad ways, power, water, waste, pollution, parking, congestion, and gory financials) it’s construction and continued operations?

if it does, then it should at the very least be put to a general vote with informed consent (a true cost benefit analysis apart from jobs created or lost).

I don’t disagree with that at all.

I know quite about designing and building out these things.

The ones I have had some knowledge about do not use water except for emergency chillers that run maybe 1 week a year since it is cheaper not to. I personally did not think Data centers in Space was more than a pipe dream, but I was talking to a guy who worked for Musk and he said they were going ahead despite what I thought were large problems with heat dissipation. If you can put one in space, you can put one on earth with minimal disruptions.

yes power is needed, but mini safe reactors seem to be all the rage right now. I don’t want to be optimistic about fusion, but I have recently seen things I would not have believed only 10 years ago.

Most jobs created are initial construction jobs. Once one these is up and running, it is largely robotic and autonomous. Data centers are not packed with workers. You are lucky to get a skeleton crew of 1 or 2.

That is not true, I have never seen robots in datacenters.

granted you do not need a large crew, like I said 40 for a large hyperscale center. Maybe 6-10 for a smaller one, not including security.

however there are a lot of people offsite who make use of them it is not like they are all autonomous. Someone has to tell the individual computers what to do.

for example AWS or Azure. yes there are large datacenters, but the capacity is rented out to whoever pays. I have had both Aws and Azure instances sometimes lots of them. there are lots of people and companies like me that create jobs offsite.

do I like the cloud ? do I like datacenters, not really so much, but there is a lot of BS propaganda about them and I have looked into the funding a bit just cause what I see is so divorced from reality.

well if you were going to study this you’d probably have to look at water/energy requirements for current super computing. the main problem with AI data centers, i’ve read, is scalability, i.e., they don’t. the human brain designed by God which is much better hardware than any AI in our very best and talented, is a miracle of miniaturization and power conservation. thus it is the very definition of how to scale amazing capacities which must balance each other perfectly.

that being said. AI is the key to gov’t control of our behavior, our medicine, public health, public education, and future machines however. that makes it irresistible to our self styled and entitled masters and they must pursuit it for those reasons alone.

but one hopes it can be done to some advantage for our children’s future. i like everything Elon has done lately. i hope he’s successful in putting these in space or maybe on the moon if they need a foundation and persistence over time. he embodies a real hope for the future.

Scalability will come with time.

Back in 1999 when TeraServer was moving I backed up their data which was just under 4 tb, I had 6 fujitsu 42u racks of drive arrays. I think they were huge 8.4gb drives

in these datacenters everything is switched out every 3-6 years

the typical server which will be installed today will have 2 processors with 128 cores, and a few TB of ram, yes I know you can get more cores, but it is a trade off between cores and speed per core.

today I have 24tb drives, yes one drive 24tb and I could get larger, maybe I can put 12 drives in a server with 2tb ram and 512 logical cores, but that is only today, what about in 5 years, or 10 years

like I said scalability is only about time.

and there is no such thing as Agi yet. I dont know if there will be. maybe it will just get closer and closer and never happen.

every time today I ask an “AI” something I as reflex say “ you are full of crap “ try again and it comes up with a different answer. today what is called AI is LLM which means it regurgitates whatever it is fed

I think I read today something about how govts are trying to manipulate LLM

The anti-datacenter people always talk about data centers using too much water. The cooler system use distilled water so that nothing accumulates or grows in the coolers. They’ll fill up the systems when they build the data centers, and if they need to top them up, it won’t be from the local taps, it’ll be from other sources of distilled water.

interesting, i’d say quantum computing has a chance of dealing with some of the scaling/processing issues. moore’s law is apparently reaching its limits. we might have to move our power sources off the earth though, unless of course we insects here don’t even matter that much. so we kind of agree on that. neural nets do have the advantage of simultaneous compute and storage, which is a major difference from traditional computing.

in terms of Kurzweil, et. al. man is Designed as a tripartite being: body, soul, and spirit. since anything in the material universe can only ape the spirit, i’d say your on very solid ground in your opinion about AGI. nothing an AI will do will reach to spirit.

that being said though, most people are very easily controlled through apeing and fascimile. we’ll have to wait and see about all that. the end is in the Lord’s hands.

We need to have some serious national discussions about water in the West and Southwest.

Hundreds of thousands of new homes on the Colorado Front Range in the past few years. There AIN’T ENOUGH WATER. And the electrical grid cannot support all the new loads from all these California hippies charging their electric cars. We’re coal fired here. The commies are methodically shutting down the coal plants for wind and solar.

We need 2-3 nuclear power-plants to support the demand.

Everyone downstream, like New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California better figure out where they’re going to get water. Because it won’t be coming from Colorado.

Communists are in charge of Colorado now. The entire Southwest will feel the pain.

My wife breathlessly told me the other day that Trump says the data centers have promised not to use much water and that they will generate their own electricity.

Just this week a new DC was announced in the Tulsa area. Providing the power from the grid will be Oklahoma’s favorite price escalator, Public Service Company of Oklahoma. I think I heard they are also asking the Utility Commission for another 25% rate hike even before the DC was announced. Nothing was said about the water.

Respect. The computer I'm typing on has a 2Tb drive. Sufficient for my needs. A desktop.

Now do 37 yottabytes like the NSA's Utah Data Center. Look those up and get back to me. Just for your awareness and professional courtesy. :)

impressive, too, KitJ. :), i started my computer engineering career in the 70’s and i’m now running linux on a 16 year, old many times repaired dell, with a paltry 2GB ram and cache, 1.3 GB swap and a 128 GB memory chip for the operating system and my few personal files. i started on teraks, commodore64s, and ibm pcs. we did have a dec vax running Berkeley and Bell Labs UNIX in our math department computer lab though. everyone had their own proprietary operating systems. lots of work to be had. ah the good old days.

Who remembers the cassette tape recorders that showed up just after the IBM punch cards?

We could write and store programs on a CASSETTE tape! Plug in your Radio Shack tape recorder, hit record, and go to town.

That was my era. Only at school. I couldn’t afford my own PC until the early 90s. I didn’t connect to the internet until the late 90s.

What times.

Now I run Linux on everything I can.
