RICHMOND, Va. — Barack Obama Elementary School will not open this week due to mold, and students will temporarily relocate to Clark Springs Elementary School while remediation continues.
Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said in a message to families Monday that teachers and staff setting up classrooms discovered "additional areas of mold growth (for example, behind bulletin board paper)," prompting the district to send everyone home for additional cleaning and testing.
"All of this is realistically going to take several days. So we will not be returning to the Obama building this week. Our goal is to do so by Monday," Kamras wrote. "In the interim, we are working to get Clark Springs Elementary School ready as a temporary space. We’ll have more information about that by tomorrow. For now, school is closed on Tuesday."
Roller coaster is a good word," said Samieh, a parent of students at the school for the past seven years, of the past five days. "The information keeps kind of cascading of 'This is what's going to happen. Oh, actually, it's not what's going to happen. Oh, we're good. Oh, we're not good.'."
The district had already pushed back Barack Obama Elementary's first day from Monday, Aug. 24, after air quality tests showed elevated mold spore levels inside the building.
Kamras said the mold growth stemmed from an HVAC outage that caused mold to spread in the school's basement and on some furniture. The district also received reports of rodents in several rooms.

Samieh said it is not the first time there have been mold issues at the school, with issues during the 2023-24 school year. She said seeing this happen again makes her feel like Obama Elementary is not as a priority as other schools

Obama Elementary is not a high priority in the Richmond school district??? That’s what some think??? Seems a bit surprising.
Aren't there rats in every room when teachers are present?

I’m confused. I thought they didn’t name schools after presidents until after they passed away?
That rule only applies to American born presidents.
I would assume this is a relatively new building. Circa 2008 or after. But I am apparently inccorect. Barack Obama Elementary School was first established in 1922, receiving the current school name in 2018.
History of the School
The site for the school, 3101 Fendall Avenue, was purchased in the early 1920’s and the building was ready for occupancy in September of 1922. In 1928, due to rapid growth in the Northside area, eight rooms were added to the building. Several renovations have taken place within the building, creating the present cafeteria and a larger media center. The most recent renovation, done during the summer of 1989 through 1990-91 school year, has greatly changed the building.
Presently, the school serves approximately 300 students in grades K-5 and Exceptional Education.
It is our hope that Barack Obama Elementary School, which has served the educational needs of boys and girls in Northside Richmond for over 100 years, will continue to do so for many years to come.

Barack Obama Elementary School will be the premier elementary school in Richmond, VA. It will operate in the spirit of excellence and be staffed by highly effective educators who genuinely love and care about our students, their families and their futures.
The school was formerly named J.E.B Stuart Elementary after the Confederate Army general J.E.B. Stuart; its name was changed in 2018 to remove the historical reference to the Confederacy. The school board voted to rename the school in June 2018.
The renaming of the school is expected to cost $26,000. To help pay for these costs, Richmond Public Schools launched a t-shirt fundraiser and raised $40,894.

I have never believe that is true for one simple reason: If Obama were born in another country, the Clinton oppo research machine would have found it an exploited it. They had the best opposition research machine in the world. If there were even the slightest sliver of info suggesting that, the Clintons would have smeared him into the next galaxy. Anyone who disagrees is rabidly pro-Clinton.
