Five teenage boys have died and four people have been taken to hospital following a two-vehicle crash in County Kildare.
The collision occurred on the M9 Northbound at Junction 3 at about 03:00 local time on Sunday.
Gardaí said the bodies of the five teenage boys, all occupants of one vehicle, have now been removed from the scene and taken to Naas General Hospital where post-mortem examinations will take place.
They said the vehicle had been travelling on the wrong side of the carriageway when a head on collision occurred with a second car.
The driver and front passenger, both women in their 30s, of the second car have been removed from the scene to Tallaght University Hospital.
A female rear seat passenger, aged in her 20s, was taken to St. Luke's General and the third passenger, who is a child, has been removed to Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin.
All four are being treated for serious injuries.
The section of the M9 from Junction 3 to Junction 4 northbound and southbound remains closed with local diversions in place.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly described those injured in the crash as "family members" who were "travelling innocently" when they were struck by the car driving on the wrong side of the motorway.
He described it as a "horrific incident" and "irresponsible and dangerous driving".
"What makes this reckless behaviour even more appalling is that in some cases it is being done for social media likes regardless of the potentially devastating impact it might have on innocent people and themselves."
Kelly added that officers "do what they can to stop such vehicles while also taking into consideration all other road users".
"Gardaí are put in a really challenging situation dealing with such incidents."

Somehow I don’t think the driver who caused the accident has a last name of “O’Reilly”.
I’m willing to bet that they’re cultural enrichment members.
And if the last name isn’t O’Reilly, is it someone who learned to drive in pretty much anywhere else in the world, and under stress got on the wrong (right) side of the road?
Obviously, criminals are gonna criminal and that’s the real source of this tragedy, but if Britain would get with the program and do what everyone else does it would probably reduce a lot of accidents for travelers and people new-to or new-from Commonwealth countries.
Five young people with their whole lives ahead of them would still be alive if the Brits would stop driving on the wrong side of the road!
It is striking to observe the callous and malevolent commentary directed at the tragic loss of innocent lives, commentary that so frequently saturates this otherwise reputable website.

They have a 0’brien and a McCarthy
White Punks On Dope
If they were,in fact, engaged in criminal activity at the time then all I can say is...no sympathy.
Ireland does have a serious problem with Third Worlders...just as the rest of the EU.
O'Brien...close enough?
The only men remaining in Ireland are the retards. All the good ones left long ago.
Notice they ascertained that two vehicles were involved in the head on collision. Who knew? Minimum two required.
Why not?
“”that in some cases it is being done for social media likes”” Don’t know what that reason would be - to see what you could get away with on the WRONG SIDE of a highway?
We had friends in CA years ago who had moved from Belfast and they had a horrible time driving on the CORRECT side of the surface streets. Didn’t have that trouble on the freeways - learned that fast, I guess. No other choice..only get one chance at that.
We’d have the same trouble driving in the UK, I suspect...

Well, this marks the end of their crime spree for sure.
