4 lemurs die of human herpesvirus, including one that had been used in a 'lemur yoga' class

Four lemurs that had close contact with people, including one via a "lemur yoga" class, caught a human herpesvirus and subsequently died, a new study shows.

The virus at fault was herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which is extremely common in humans. In people, the infection usually causes no symptoms or produces cold sores. In primates, though, the infections can often be deadly — in this case, all four lemurs developed encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, and died.

This is the first time that an HSV-1 infection has been confirmed in lemurs via a molecular analysis — namely, PCR tests like a doctor might use to diagnose a person's infection. Human herpesvirus infections have been documented in lemurs in the past, albeit rarely, and those reports used laboratory methods other than molecular analysis.

These recent cases highlight the dangers of close contact between animals and humans, scientists say.

"We've evolved these kissing behaviors that have resulted in pretty effective transmissions [of HSV-1] to the point where you look at infection rates of humans and they're very high," study co-author Dr. Jim Wellehan, a professor at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, told Live Science.

Humans are primates.

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Infraclass: Placentalia

Order: Primates

Superfamily: Hominoidea

Family: Hominidae

Genus: Homo

Species: Homo sapiens

Normally would not care but this is from "Science dot com".

And that humans are primates is SCIENCE.

Whoever was in charge of caring for these animals should have protected them better. They are animals pulled out of their natural environment. They are not moving, squeaking toys!
They also have a nasty bite if they feel threatened.

Well, at least it wasn’t a bat that accidentally ended up in some pangolin’s cloaca and ended up getting eaten from a wet market!

I figured.

And if it was someone's blog or a post here on FR I let it pass.

But this is a professional article written by people with editors and proof readers.

They should have their facts right.

On the other hand, maybe they didn't forget the word "other".

There was a teacher a few years back who got fired because he gave the students a deck of cards and told them to "pick out the primates" One of the human pictures was of BHO.

Apparently pointing out that he and all other humans are primates is racist or something.

Maybe we are going to have to start asking "What is a primate?"

Are these the same Lemurs I’ve heard since a kid, that like to jump off cliffs in mass units?

> re: Syphilis explosion

Is explosive syphilis like explosive diarrhea?

If so, I don’t want to know what it explodes from. (I can only guess)

I was watching a reality veterinarian show last week, and there were two rabbits who were cage mates. They both had syphilis. I don’t even want to know ...

Okay, looked up Lemurs…

Not quite a monkey, but still in the feces slinging category of critters.

So, in other primates Herpesvirus causes often-fatal brain disease yet our group has a very high infection rate with lesser disease symptoms...

Could explain some things like Democrats, the DSA and Congress.
