Senator Darline Graham’s (R-SC) shocking debate fail has gone viral — with observers on both sides roasting the senator’s stunning lack of command on key issues.
The defining moment in Graham’s debate with Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) came when co-moderator Greta Van Susteren asked: “Are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States? And if so, why or how?”
“I’m just gonna be honest here,” Graham replied. “I’m not, on national security- I’m not that informed on national security, so- but I do support the military. My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years, so I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the Army. I’m not a polished politician up here. National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I support the military.”
Graham — the sister of the late Lindsey Graham, who was appointed to finish his term by President Donald Trump — made other gaffes during the evening. She estimated the population of South Carolina to be “50 million” — miles off the actual total of roughly 5.5 million.
But her non-answer on Taiwan dominated the talk after the debate.
“Lindsey Graham was well informed on the United States’ national security,” said former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who is supporting Norman. “Darline Graham admits she’s not. This is not something you inherit. And it’s critical in the U.S. Senate.”
“I’m sorry, but respectfully, even accounting for her being new to the job, this is embarrassing and inexcusable,” added Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation. “China’s threat toward Taiwan is a bit of a big deal, especially — it would seem — for a member of the U.S. Senate.”
And other conservatives slammed Graham as well:
Ken Cuccinelli II @KenCuccinelli
She has no record. She has worked hard to hide any firm positions, and here she is at least being honest.
But let's be honest too - this answer would apply to a lot of areas of responsibility that @RalphNorman is frankly well prepared to address and to do so conservatively.

🚨Stunning debate flop from Darline Graham!
“I’m just gonna be honest—I’m not that informed on national security.”
The main criticism is that she’s not qualified for this 6-year position.
Now she reveals she can’t answer basic national security questions!

Can we just stop this ridiculous experiment in nepotism now???

This is outrageous. She's a US Senator! She should not have been appointed to fill out her late brother's term.

Holy Sh t 🤦🏼♂️
This is completely unbelievable she said this.
She wants to be a U.S. Senator and she is clueless on Geopolitical issues and safety of our country.
This by it self should end her candidacy.

This is nauseating.
This is the person they say I owe my vote to as a conservative.
This is the person they say I have to vote for to prove my loyalty to the administration.
This is the person they say I must vote for to “pay tribute”.
South Carolina we deserve someone who represents us.
Darline Graham is not one of us and doesn’t care enough to have an opinion.
Joey Mannarino NewsForce @JoeyMannarino
Darline Graham literally couldn’t answer a basic question about the South China Sea and wants to be a US Senator.
And she even admitted it.
This is just weird and ridiculous.
And as you might expect, left-leaning observers were eager to join the pile-on:

Here’s the best example I’ve ever seen of why nepotism shouldn’t have any place in politics. Especially in a time of war.
Calling Stephen Colbert.
There’s still a lane for you in South Carolina.
More and more by the day.

Sen. Darline Graham — Lindsey’s Sister — running for U.S. Senate: “National security’s not my thing.” 🤷🏼♀️ 😬
(She’s running to replace Lindsey, who never met a war he didn’t love)
Aaron Rupar on X: "Darlene Graham just bumbled through one of the worst responses to a question during a political debate you'll ever see"
Jon Cooper 🇺🇸 @joncoopertweets
Oh, good Lord. Darlene Graham, Trump’s pick to fill her brother Lindsey’s seat in the U.S. Senate, is NOT the brightest crayon in the box.
This is painful to watch.
Grant Stern @grantstern
Remember that SNL skit with Chevy Chase satirizing Gerald Ford by saying, "It was my understanding that there would be no math."?
Well, Darline Graham just did it in the South Carolina Republican Senate debate.
In real life.
Proved it on Newsmax. But considering Newsmax is in far fewer homes than Atlanta News First, how many in the state watched this glorified press conference?
Atlanta News First (which did the previous debates) is available in every market in the state with an affiliate there. (They also are the group that gives us selected Atlanta Braves games.)
Basically: “I have no idea what I’m doing, but I would like to be in charge of the big decisions that control your life.”
The idea that a senator’s sister with no real experience would even be seriously considered is a joke. We live in an age of political royalty. And for those who comment something like “give her a chance” - that’s like saying give anyone off the street serious consideration to be a US Senator. No thanks. She is getting consideration just because she is Lindsey Graham’s sister. If she wasn’t, no one would be talking about her at all.
Practice nepotism and this is what you get. A whole bunch of people should be horsewhipped.
Hope SC GOP has a good backup plan.
Man is anyone driving the GOP station wagon? Doesn't look like it.
Trump was supposed to campaign with her...I hope he cancels.
Many who debate well won their seats in congress and still got us 40 trillion in debt. Failing in debates is not one of America’s problems, it’s not even on the radar of problems.
Trump didn’t appoint her.
It will be the highlights on X and YT and Rumble that will go viral. She’s a disaster.
If she ‘inherited’ Lindsay’s staff and advisors they just demonstrated why they should be fired. They had several weeks to get her up to speed while knowing this debate and obvious press questioning was unavoidable.
South Carolina may well elect Caligula’s horse. Her brother made it, after all.
It could have been worse: “Miss South Carolina” had ludicrous responses awhile back.
I’m reminded of “Russia is a big country: Ukraine is a small country”. (Before Poland’s PM saved her day)
5 people on the stage. Could the 3 others dilute and give her the nomination? Sanford up there was a joke.
I guess this idiocy would be par for the course in his mind, as he’s had two of his real estate agents serving as envoys and negotiators on critical matters in the Middle East since last year.
The short clip I heard was an absolute lead ballon.
Probably a nice lady, I’m sure she misses her brother .
She should be handing out punch and cookies somewhere.
Not “hanging out” in Congress. Such is the state of that body.
If she could locate Taiwan or the South China Sea on a globe , I would be impressed.
“Our sacred Democracy”
Darline’s candidacy is a Trump creation. If it wasn’t for the Trump cult, she wouldn’t have made it to the run off.
She’s another reason why Trump needs to put more thought into his endorsements and his supporters need to avoid supporting him on blind faith.
It was OK to appoint her to finish the last ~6 months of her brother’s term, but stupid to endorse or encourage her to actually run for the seat. The condition should have been: honor your brother in this temporary service, and you will step aside.
