Florida Democrats Hand Republicans a November Gift
RealClear Politics ^ | 19 Aug, 2026 | Susan Crabtree

Far-left State Rep. Angie Nixon handed the progressive movement a surprise win against deep-pocketed Alex Vindman in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary Tuesday night.

With nearly all precincts reporting, Nixon had handily defeated Vindman, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and a top witness in President Trump’s 2019 impeachment, by 12 points, 56% to 44%.

Nixon’s victory over Vindman despite his name recognition and being vastly overspent in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary came as surprise precisely because of where it happened.

Progressives or those aligned with the democratic socialist movement have racked up primary victories elsewhere this cycle, but almost all of them came in blue or purple states.

Florida is neither. The once swing state has turned red over the last several years, which is exactly why Republicans are already treating Nixon’s win as a gift: a weak candidate that gives them the advantage of tying Democrats across the ballot to the party’s left flank heading into November.

Vindman had amassed a $16 million war chest for the campaign while Nixon raised a paltry $974,000 by comparison.

Shortly after the race was called, Trump celebrated Vindman’s defeat.

Angie Nixon will now run against Florida GOP Sen. Ashley Moody who was appointed by Governor DeSantis to replace Marco Rubio.

We all celebrated that defeat. He thought he was the hero but found out he was the zero.

Vindman is a creep, as is his brother. He was in on the phone call because he is a native speaker of Ukrainian. As a matter of course, the U.S. does not record conversations between the President and other heads of state, but does have staff listening in and trying to create a transcript. Vindman was apparently there to catch asides that Zelinsky might make to other Ukrainians. For both diplomatic and security reasons the contents of these conversations should never be made public without the consent of both heads of state.

Vindman violated a trust and his duty. For what he saw a a higher calling. His ego, and ambition.

Whew, dodged a bullet there (not).

The race now moves from “Safe Republican” to “Safe Republican”, LOL.

The divisive GOP primary for Governor *may* prove to be more costly, unimaginable (for those who lack imagination, or who lack a comprehension of reality) as it may be for a Democrat to be elected statewide in such a deep “red” state.

Byron Donalds is described by his detractors as an ex-Democrat from Brooklyn, a felon and a sleazebag who is shirking his duties as a congressman as he campaigns full-time for Governor (Democrats have no problem with ANY of those things when it’s their guy doing it).

James Fishback, who finished 3rd in the GOP primary yesterday with 10% of the vote (Donalds won with only 48%) has supposedly already endorsed Donalds. Solid conservative Jay Collins, who finished 2nd, apparently has not but surely (?) he will.

Donalds *should* still win in November, but he is hardly dominating in the polls. He is actually trailing in the most recent poll. The GOP doesn’t need complete unity to win in Florida, but it still needs enough unity.

Doughboy was nothing more than fodder used by democrats in an attempt to get orange man.

When it failed they threw him aside like used cat litter.

Not exactly a new story with the left.

Id be interested to know where that 16 mil came from.

“Transplants who brought their politics with them.”

My first thought. This will be a all-DSA-hands-on-deck campaign. They would LOVE to get this seat.

Polls are a joke. I don’t believe any of ‘em....and I would with all due respect, suggest you don’t either.

Someone said Vindman spent a lot of democrat money, that is a nice bonus.

The old mnemonic, MICE, about motivations for espionage goes: Money, Ideology, Coersion and Ego. Vindman was ostensibly motivated by Ideology, but I think Ego got the bit in its mouth. He was freaking Light Colonel paid to eavesdrop on phone calls with dreams of Boothean fantasies of taking down a president. He was Thomas Crooks with worse eyesight and less guts.

Don’t fall into that trap. Texas blames incoming Californians. Maine and New Hampshire blame incoming Massholes.

It is an easy out. I can tell you all those states, including Florida, have their own homegrown, native Leftist a-holes...enough to allow this kind of result.

Israel was a major point of contrast and contention during Alex Vindman’s 2026 Democratic primary campaign since it involves billion and billions of tax dollars, party politics, Congressional activity and major US State Dept policy issues.

Vindman framed himself as a supporter of Israel, criticized elements within the Democrat party for crossing into antisemitism when criticizing Israel, and faced pushback for not supporting a complete military cutoff for the Democrat party failing to label Israeli actions in Gaza as genocide.

Angie Nixon’s position as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, centered her campaign heavily on Palestinian rights, advocating for ceasefires, and openly criticizing Israel’s US tax-funded military actions.

Nixon scored a major upset over Vindman (considered the establishment favorite and fundraising leader), by securing the Democratic nomination.

The sharp policy divide over Israel served as a primary flashpoint illustrating the broader ideological friction within the Democratic Party between moderate/establishment candidates and the burgeoning progressive wing.

Vindman is a stalwart supporter of Israel. Among the fissures that developed between Nixon and Vindman is the anti-Israel Democratic Socialists of America.

“Transplants who brought their politics with them”

That has yet to be determined. But this election cycle should be a good indication.

My opinion is most that have relocated here in the last few years did so to escape the democrat shitholes....not to create new ones.

Polls are generally worthless, other than the one on Election Day.

True that this may be a safe Republican Senate seat but with the Commie Marxist DSA Stooge winning the primary for Senate, it allows Republicans across Florida and the country to campaign on the issue of the DSA nutballs taking over the Democrat party and not just in Red states.

How many older Florida democrats (especially the Jewish ones) may decide to sit at home and not go out to vote this fall if they are repeatedly reminded by campaign ads that the Democrat nominee for Senate hates Israel and the Jewish people in general? It not only suppresses the Democrat turnout for the Senate race but will also depress the turnout in other races like the Governor’s race.

He was born in Ukraine when it was part of Russia. He’s Russian first. He speaks both. Remember Zelensky was/is Russian..and only spoke Russian until he was 17. All his variety shows were Russian.

We got one here also in the top of the country in MI, a muzzie too who squeaked out a dem victory over Haley Stevens. She is dumber than Kamala Harris if you can believe that. Mostly Detroit votes and does not represent the state.

Looks like a pick-up for the GOP/GOPe.
