The organization of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to announce the death of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the 8th stage of the race, between Melgaço and Fafe.
At this time of profound grief, the organization of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation extend their deepest condolences to Finlay Tarling’s family, his teammates, NSN Development Team, and all his friends and loved ones.
In light of this tragic event, the race will be neutralized until the finish in Fafe and, as a sign of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony scheduled for today will not take place.
The organisation will provide any additional information as soon as circumstances allow.

Finlay Tarling, the promising young Welsh cyclist and time trial specialist, has died at the age of 19 following a serious incident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The tragedy occurred on Friday during the 166.8km route between Melgaco and Fafe.
From state television:
Mr. Tarling's bicycle collided with a spectator in a white Renault crossover that was traveling in the opposite direction of the race. Mr. Tarling had been the first bike not in the lead pack on Arcozelo, Ponte de Lima on Highway EN 306.
