Typhoon Dolphin batters Japan's Okinawa before bearing down on China

Typhoon Dolphin has cut power to at least 44,000 buildings and injured at least five people after hitting Japan's Okinawa island on Saturday.

Flights to and from Okinawa's main airport - Naha International Airport - were cancelled as it closed on Friday as the storm arrived.

The storm had maximum wind speeds of 162km/h (101mph) on Saturday and has been categorised as a "very strong" typhoon by the Japan Meteorological Agency, which warned of high waves, storm surges and lightning strikes.

Dolphin is expected to make landfall on China's eastern coast late on Sunday or early on Monday. Authorities there have shut ports and schools ahead of its arrival.

The main areas in Japan affected by the typhoon are the islands of Okinawa and Amami in the far south-west of the country.

Five elderly people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Okinawan prefectural government. Three of them fell because of the strong winds, it said.

Japan's national broadcaster NHK reports numerous accounts of trees being toppled by strong winds throughout Nago city in Okinawa, while a car was found overturned and leaking oil in a parking lot.

I was watch officer once in Okinawa when we got hit by a Typhoon. Rode around in the cab of a 900 series 5-ton with the windows and windshield down so glass couldn't be broken. Wearing goggles, helmets, etc.. I guess we were supposed to look for any emergencies or building damage. Wind was roaring, rain bashing into me and the driver. Couldn't see shit.

Against China? If China has a problem and other places are having problems its more likely a result of China's weather modification programs.

Thanks for that info, Pete. If China is doing this to itself . . . well, maybe they need to dial things back a bit! The uncensored footage coming out of China is horrifying, with entire villages being swept away. Also, when China decides to release millions of gallons of water from behind overstressed dams, downstream villages are given no warning at all. And then when PLA troops are sent out to assist, it’s only for show; they do nothing but arrange foto shoots.

My daughter is on Okinawa. I asked her. She said, “Yawn!”

She was told to stay home from work for a day. No power interruptions, good cell phone and internet. It was windy and rainy but, she said, not even remotely like Hurricane Helene hitting Georgia in 2024. She would have gone to work if her boss hadn’t told her to skip work.

You learn something new everyday. I did not realize Okinawa is so far south. The headline did not make sense as a typhon hitting the mainland is going to porceed to the Koreas and Eastern Russia.

Also a typhon hitting the mainland of Japan will probably break apart as it passes of the island nation. Not so much with Okinawa which is similar to the carribean islands.
