The AI Bailout Could Be Baked Into the AI Bubble
The American Prospect ^ | Aug 3, 2026 | David Dayen

Private credit companies are key owners of AI-related assets. Many of their parent private equity firms own life insurers that are dumping grounds for bad loans—and subject to state bailouts.

If AI is propping up the economy, who is propping up AI?

The answer, extrapolating from a fascinating new paper about private credit and the life insurance industry, could be the U.S. taxpayer.

Private credit is private equity’s $3 trillion financing arm. They make largely unregulated, relatively high-risk, relatively complex and opaque loans, mostly to their own portfolio companies. Private credit is entangled, maybe more than the rest of Wall Street, in AI mania.

Private equity today owns at least $1.5 trillion in assets in life insurance companies. These life insurers have mounds of available capital from policyholder payments that don’t need to be paid out until the end of their lives. Private equity firms have plowed this capital into risky private credit loans that could weaken the structure of the life insurer. But if the insurer goes insolvent, the private equity firm won’t have to pay; you will. That’s because instead of passing through bankruptcy, insolvent life insurers have all their liabilities—in particular the policyholder claims—paid for by state guaranty funds

The captive life insurer, in other words, is leaking out more money to its private equity owner and taking much higher risk on its balance sheet. No policyholder really knows this is happening and isn’t used to checking the holdings of its life insurer

This is just SOOOO corrupt. After the mortgage securities crash of 2008/2009, banksters got bailed out by the government (both Republicans and Democrats guilty) and gave themselves bigger bonuses while hardworking Americans lost their homes. Looks like the same may happen again if/when AI crashes.

The government made money out of the crash. The bad bank executives did not get bonuses.

Complete garbage insurance companies are not controlled by private equity , they are publicly owned and their investments are regulated by the national association of insurance commissioners (NAIC). The internet once again making CNN look honest.

Does this explain Clarksville, Arkansas signing on for $50 billion in bonds for a Data Center?

I no longer have any insurance but I do pay a hell of a lot of taxes.

Palantir is doing gangbusters...by NOT working with the Big AI Mafia, and setting up companies with their OWN, private LLMs onsite.
