Wisconsin man flies helicopter to sporting goods store to avoid traffic

RICHFIELD, Wis. — A 69-year-old man flew a helicopter from the Rosendale area to a Cabela’s store in Richfield on Saturday evening because “the drive was too long,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

A sheriff’s deputy responded about 6 p.m. to a report that a helicopter had landed in the Cabela’s parking lot in the Village of Richfield.

The deputy contacted the pilot, a 69-year-old Rosendale man, who said he had flown to the sporting goods store. The drive from Rosendale to Richfield takes about 50 minutes.

The sheriff’s office said the pilot was properly licensed, landed safely and complied with all applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations. He also answered the deputy’s questions about helicopter-landing requirements.

“We can honestly say this isn’t your everyday parking complaint,” the sheriff’s office said.

No arrests were made, and no violations were issued.

That could work at Farm & Fleet and Woodman’s, too! You’d be limited to Edgerton for Culver’s, as the other ones have parking lots that are too small.

I’m surprised Culver’s DOESN’T have a helicopter pad on the roof!

As long as he called the local tower with a flight plan he would be okay(I think).

Dean Kamen flies his helicopter from his house in Bedford, NH to downtown Manchester, NH to DECA(his company and building he owns) all the time. He calls into the tower at the Manchester airport prior to departure with his flight plan.

It is less than five miles.

Wasn’t he required to file a flight plan?

When I lived in Chicago, a number of people commuted from Wisconsin in their own private planes. Not every day but perhaps flying back and forth twice a week. I think they lived in communities with private landing strips and then had private hangars in the airport in Chicago.

Could have been worse.
