Even as a fixture in California cuisine and a sizable industry for the state’s farmers, avocados have presented an ongoing mystery for scientists: How do they easily flip sexes?
In a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, California researchers have finally answered that question by tracing the process in avocado trees back to a single gene.
“Even for a plant that is so familiar to us, there’s been this great mystery for so long,” Jeffrey Groh, a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley and first author of the study, told SFGATE. “It’s super exciting to lift the hood on this remarkable example of the diversity of sexual reproduction strategies in plants.”
In California, where avocados are the official state fruit and the industry value is about $500 million, the find will be an immediate advantage for breeders trying to create the best varieties.
The flowers of avocados trees, which are hermaphrodites, act either as male by releasing pollen or as female by receiving it. About half of the trees, so-called A-types, open female flowers in the morning and male in the afternoon. B-types do the opposite. The phenomenon naturally prevents the trees from self-pollinating and inbreeding. And on farms, growers carefully plant a mixture of A-types and B-types in their fields, since they easily pollinate each other.
The problem has been for breeders, who are trying to bring together desirable qualities like taste, size, number of fruits and resilience to weather. It can take over a decade before an avocado plant produces its first flowers, meaning breeders had to wait years before they knew which were type-A and which were type-B.

So, they analyzed Governor Retard’s brain and found that it was merely a different form of avocado, and they’re going to graft some it onto existing avocados to see what happens but there are fears that the experiment might lessen avocado IQ.
Yikes, tranniecados! All this time. Yuck.
Like Breeding Pine Trees ?
Let’s go full sensimilla and toss the pit, while we’re at it.
Holy guacamole Batman!!.........
Hmm....wonder what the two seedlings I just planted identify as.
I guess it doesn’t matter!
Not sure which would be better. Gotta try male alnd female and trannie avos. Labels required to explain. Labels would be larger than the avocado they’re glued on.
😂😂🤣🤣
Even California’s avocados want to be non-binary.
I’ll keep buying the ones grown in the RGV.
Si, señorita ... y mi, tabien.
I’m sorry the writer felt compelled to apply LBGT philosophy to simple botany.
Those familiar with avocado trees know they are either type A or type B. The article said they’ve found a way to use DNA to determine which is which. This is a boon to avocado growers and also to the home gardener who wants to ensure a steady supply of fruit by having at least one of each type of plant.
Those fortunate enough to live in an avocado-rich neighborhood, with a tree every half block or so, have nothing to worry about and can count on getting some fruit off of their backyard tree.

My first reaction is that this is thinly-disguised LGBTQ+ Propaganda
So.....I took a quick look.... well, well, well...

Coincidence?

Fruits, nuts and avocados. But I repeat myself.
Papaya are male, female, and hermaphrodite, but can grow from seed in 18 months. Have to grow several to make certain they can cross pollinate.
Seems like California has such a ‘steady supply of fruits’ that it exports a lot of them.
What about Jeb Bush’s Guacamole Bowls?
