William Shakespeare was a switch hitter, as those who’ve studied his sonnets know. Christopher Marlowe probably the same. Art is art. What he does with his johnson and anise and other orifices does not concern me. What he wrote does, and this was both great poetry and a great statement.

Same with other artists, such as Tchaikowski, Hart Crane, Al Ginzberg, ST Coleridge’s addiction to laudinum, and Byrd’s addiction to heroine. I even like Woody Guthrie despite his communism, and Ezra Pound despite his fascism and anti-Semitism. They had something valid to say. I draw the line with Roman Polanski, who drugged and raped a little girl. He’s just a pig, I don’t care how good his movies are.
